A few addenda:
The original terminus of Route 6 was at Castlebyrne Park, off Newtown Park Avenue.
Route 17B ran over the whole length of the 17A route, operating via Kilbarrack Road to Dublin Road, thence to James Larkin Road to reach Dollymount Strand.
Route 20 also had one trip extended to the route 21 terminus (Ring Street); in the timetable, it was listed as "To Inchicore Works". This carried over to the 20B.
Route 22B operated over most of the current route 38's route, via Auburn Avenue and Castleknock Road, but then via the route 22 in Cabra. Terminus was at Blanchardstown Centre.
Route 25 had alternate service to either Dodsborough, Arthur Griffith Park (via Adamstown Road & Esker Road) or simply terminating at Lucan Village.
Route 29B operated between the City Centre and Kilbarrack, terminating on Kilbarrack Road approximately at Howth Junction Station.
Route 33 used to operate via places like Loughshinny and Mourne View.
Route 37 originally operated to/from Villa Park estate off Blackhorse Avenue; later, it was changed to operate via Skreen Road to Ashtown Cross. Extended to Carpenterstown when route 39C was cancelled.
There was a period where route 38A operated to Coolmine Cross via Clonsilla Road (original route 39 terminus); later, was extended to Sheepmoor when route 39 was thus extended. I used to see these buses operate to/from Sheepmoor back when I was a kid attending the Coolmine Sports Complex.
Routes 39 and 39A used to run via Castleknock Road full-time, as did route 70. Route 39A ran into Clonsilla via the full length of Clonsilla Road. When the 39 was extended from Sheepmoor to Clonsilla, it originally operated via Blakestown Road. The original route 39B ran via what is now the regular 39 route (Navan Road by-passing Castleknock).
Route 40B's official terminus was Dubber Cross; but extensions were in the timetable to/from St. Margaret's, Kilsallaghan and Oldtown.
Route 54 was originally extended to Kilnamanagh before Castle Lawns.
Route 67 used to run alternate service in Celbridge; some buses went to the entrance to Castletown House, some went to St. Patrick's Park.

64A City Centre - Stillorgan via Leeson St
This still exists as the 46B. Completely identical to the old 64A for years, until the termini were changed to Parnell Square and Sandyford Industrial Estate.
78B City Centre - Drumfin Road.
Revived (somewhat) by the current route 206.
There's also the former route 37 service to/from Villa Park. The oil deposits from the buses were evident for many years after the route was altered to run via Skreen Road to terminate (initially) at Ashtown Roundabout.
The 7A operated between Eden Quay and Sallynoggin (Pearse Villas) for many years, before the 7 came into being.
After route 14 started operating to Landscape Road/Hillside Drive in Churchtown beyond the original Braemor Road terminus, route 47A became the Rockbrook branch of the 47, the 47 operating solely to Tibradden subsequently.
The former route 58 between Mackintosh Park and Ballybrack was extended to Shanganagh Cliffs Estate before being cancelled.
There was a period when route 2 did not operate; and before its cancellation period, it was extended to Wilfield Road/Gilford Park after the 52 was changed from a City Centre-Sandymount route to a Sydney Parade-Belfield route.
The 155 should be added to this list, what with the 19A being re-routed to take over this route before 2003.
IIRC, the Clover Hill Road service prior to the route 79 extension never bore the number 78C; I recall it being route 78, but a part-time extension of that route. The 78, of course, is back as the low-frequency alternate route to the 78A operating via St. John's Road West instead of Emmet Road/Old Kilmainham/Mount Brown/James Street/Thomas Street. The original terminus of the 78A was the Cherry Orchard Hospital gate; it was subsequently extended to Rowlagh, then Balgaddy.Posted 3 years ago # -

there is no direct route
get the 16A bus from Arrivals hall of dublin airport and get off at Burger King on Upper O'Connell Street. Cross the street and go to the 38 bus stop. Get on the 38 and it will bring you to the Navan Road. Both fares will be ¤1.50(adult fare) each. Hope this helps. There are other ways to get from the airport to the Navan Road but, in my opinion, this is the most straighforward one.

33 still operate via loughshinny and past mourne view on way to balbriggan. There was a christmas service route 79a from cherry orchard to thomas street.

Everyone swears that there was a 78C going to Clover Hill Road; rather, I remember that it was the 78 extended beyond Spiddal Park serving Clover Hill Road. What year did the 78C run, if at all? because I recall the 78 serving Clover Hill Road right before its cancellation and the extension of route 79 into both Clover Hill Road area and Spiddal Park.
Route 46 I recall as having service between College Street (never Fleet Street, since it turned around on Westland Row and Pearse Street) and Cabinteely (Rochestown Avenue roundabout) with certain trips extended to Shankill Corbawn Lane.
The 42C I recall turning around by Marigold Court.
There used to be branches of route 51 serving Clonburris and Boot Road; these were numbered 51, with no alpha suffix. There was even a 51 Bawnogue; this was later turned into the 51B, when the frequent alternate service to Bawnogue and Neilstown became too confusing.
The current 66B operated as an un-numbered route for decades, even though it was usually in the 66 timetable (although not made clear); there were journeys listed as "To or from Leixlip only", but those trips would have no number and would either turn around at Louisa Bridge or go down the road past Barnhall into what used to be the Irish Meat Packers (Hewlett-Packard location)...and you wouldn't know which way the bus was going unless you asked the driver. Some trips on these un-numbered buses would go up to Louisa Bridge, then double-back via Barnhall. There was also a trip in the timetable on a numbered route 66, operating via Barnhall/IMP on its way to Maynooth, which would double-back out to the N4 (or T3 as the Lucan Road was known until the late 1970s).
The 39 route went through some changes. It was the 39 Coolmine Cross, then the 39 Sheepmoor, then the 39 Clonsilla (via Blakestown Road, later switched to be via Huntstown & Hartstown), then it was the 39 to Blanchardstown Centre via Coolmine, Clonsilla, Huntstown & Hartstown, then the terminus was switched back to St. Joseph's Hospital...ad nauseam.
Not mentioned here again are the 78A "Hospital Gate" (i.e. Cherry Orchard Hospital); this later became the 78A Rowlagh; subsequently the 78A Balgaddy; then with the curtailment of the 51 Neilstown, the 78A to Liffey Valley Centre.
The route 18 didn't always run to Palmerstown; for years, buses used to run with the old terminus "Ballyfermot" because CIE were too cheap to change the old roll-signs where the final destination was listed on the bottom scroll, probably counting on changing the roll-signs to the newer format which would have the destination in both Irish and English on the upper scroll. There used to be short trips originating/terminating at Larkfield Gardens.
Let's not forget the 17 operating via Avoca Avenue briefly...as well as the same route 17's brief alternate service between Rialto and St. Vincent's Hospital.
And of course, there was the brief service on route 50 to Carriglea...Posted 3 years ago # -
I have a time table here from 1982 showing journeys on the 78 marked C with a note 78C to or from cloverhill road. The 78 never operated to cloverhill road since the extension of the 79 from kylemore road to Cherry orchard avenue in 82 as this then served cloverhill or legoland as it is locally known. The 78a was also destined ronanstown and quarryvale just before liffey valley opened.

I thought the 54 was cancelled before the square was opened. Also Daz 79A never operated to spiddal park as 79 only operated to cherry orchard avenue until 1994 and was extended to spiddal park with the cancellation pf 78. Also 193/194 to link estates with clondalkin station were advertised and timetabled but never actually operated. 18 originally terminated in larkfield gardens before the western suburbs were completed. I also have a timetable showing 101/A. 101 clockwise from Beaumont hosp and A anti-clockwise in circular service to harmonstown dart(feeder)
