what is it with people giving drivers abuse about the bus that never came " ive been waiting here for the last 40 mins and the bus that should have been here 25 mins ago never came " what do they want the driver to do about the bus that never came it not like he can drive two buses is it.Posted 2 years ago #

Unfortunately the reason some drivers get a hard time is because there are some drivers out there with the wrong mentality, they seem to be in groups however and vary from route to route.
I personally use Harristown routes and the drivers are always friendly, every morning I get a thanks when I pay my fare and they're always happy to answer any questions, but whenever I've used Donnybrook routes I have found their drivers far less understanding and grumpy and often will not even attempt to answer questions.
Maybe it is because Harristown is a relatively new garage with new-ish blood so there hasn't been something that has set in over the years, but there are some routes and drivers that do take the piss (The 38/38A for instance) so you always will get that.

You may well be one of the genuine drivers on the route but some of them take the piss.
Some of the issues I have had in a year of getting it.
- Driver did not know where he was going, he asked passenger, got there and asked if they could stay on so he could find his way back to the garage. Now why the garage do not train these guys I do not know. It happened to me 5 times in 12 months!
- No Standing on a 06 Bus a driver once said because they need to keep them in good condition.
- Change "Does Not Work" statement, only to miraculously start working as soon as an inspector got on.
- Going Past stops as full when there is two people standing. An AV has 15 standing if I remember correctly.
- Driving purposely slow when green lights on traffic lights, and fast when at reds. Driver then phones garage to say he cannot operate the duty the other way as is late running after the garage tell him thats okay he drives normally.
The biggest bugbear of the 38/38A is the non sticking to Timetable, although much of that is down to the garage, it's pretty funny when the same bus and the same driver who picked you up one day, drives past you the next day out of service at exactly the same time, and therefore we are one short which then causes overcrowding which then means people being late.
You then phone the garage who turn round and say, yes, the bus is AV446 for instance, it just went past your stop, when the thing was out of service the whole time!
The 16:30 from Damastown always used to go the wrong way, it's down as Ballycoolin but it only went there like 2/10 times. Also once had a very rude woman driver who would stop the engine at each stop and work out who could not go any further on their ticket, and would call out for them to get off at this stop and the bus was not moving until they did, yes I get her point but during rush hour it's not the ideal way to deal with it. She also has a paranoia about her wing mirrors.
I also find the drivers on the 38/38A quite rude, they are pretty much very short and say the minimum they possibly can, I asked a driver once why there had been no bus for the last hour when there was supposed to be three he turns round and tells me "The traffic was too busy so the garage canceled them, the union does not allow us to drive in heavy traffic what the hell do you want me to do for you skulls?" If the drivers will not drive in heavy traffic what the hell kind of bus company is this? Do you think if I called in to my company saying work was too busy so I was taking the day off they would accept it?
The only good 38's that are reliable tend to be the Euros (Do these come from a different depot as they seem very different) and the DT's are in much better condition and have much more power too.
Please don't take it personally there are also some good drivers on the 38/38A but there are more than the average of bad ones also.

I'm not the only one with this issue.

You drivers must not forget, when a passenger has had a long and frustrating wait, you are his/her first opportunity to speak with a member of DB staff, and therefore, in a sense, a representative of the company. I find I am doing this less nowadays as I have a mobile and there is now a handy number to ring which is posted up on some stops.Posted 2 years ago #

"You drivers must not forget, when a passenger has had a long and frustrating wait, you are his/her first opportunity to speak with a member of DB staff"
But people dont walk into tesco and start shouting at the shelf stackers because the prices are too high. complaining about poor service is fine, but complain to the correct people.

Andy, I agree that people should not shout at drivers or shelf-stackers. Of course the difference with Tesco is that there is probably a manager or supervisor present.Posted 2 years ago #

And at the other end of a phone call there are managers and supervisors ready to deal with unhappy calls. Honestly at times I cant believe everything drivers put up with in their jobs, can you imagine if i walked into a shop, opened a can of beer, started smoking and then take a whizz on the floor, t what stage do you think i'dbeeither thrown out or arrested???

as it was examined by the governament last year it was said that if DB and the gardai worked together it would work

Andy, it still isn't good enough. What happens if a bus fails to turn up after the phone line is closed at, I think, 8pm? On Thursday night the 21.10 14A from Parnell Square failed to show. If I had asked the driver of the 21.30 14 about it, he would probably have said he knew nothing, and he might have said so in quite an unpleasant way. This needs to change. Drivers need to lose the "How do you expect mme to know?" attitude and should instead radio the depot in order to find out why the previous bus didn't come, and pass this info on to the passenger.Posted 2 years ago #

I agree with Richard but what can be done to stop this problem

There is always someone in the garage to answer the phone, right up till the last bus gets home to the garage at night.
