Re-Introduction of No. 8
(15 posts)-
Does anybody know anything about the planned route of the new, improved No. 8 bus which is supposedly due to enter service December 12th as reported in yesterday's Irish Times ? It appears it won't go through Dun Laoghaire (good) but slightly vague as to how it will get from Glasthule to MonkstownPosted 4 years ago #

dont believe it until u see it!!!!! if and when it comes on, will it be used???
thats on of the reasons why the 8 was cancelled
and will it have any affect on the 59???

There's a thread on the Garaiste.com message board about this...apparently, a local politician is touting the return of this route.
The route is the same as the old 8 except for west of Castlepark Road and east of Carrickbrennan Road. The new routing, going towards Dalkey, is the same as the old 8 (via the Rock Road corridor, onto Monkstown Road); but then the route is to turn right down Carrickbrennan Road, then turns left onto Mounttown Upper and continues onto Mounttown Lower; then the bus is to serve the whole length of Glenageary Road Upper; continues onto Barnhill Road, but then makes a left turn onto Castlepark Road (serving its entire length); from there, it turns right onto Ulverton Road and ends at its old terminus. No details as yet regarding departure times, or frequency of operation.
As for "will it be used", consider that they had to re-route the 59 to take up the slack of the canceled 8; the 59 ran down Albert Road prior to that.Posted 4 years ago # -

Nope, looks like it will be operated by Dublin Bus.
This is from the Southside People:
Bus is on the way back
THE Dalkey to City Centre No 8 bus service is to be re-introduced following a legal complaint in 2003 to the European Commission against the Irish Government.
Councillor Eugene Regan (FG) initiated a campaign in November 2003 to secure the return of the service with a formal complaint to the Commission. Cllr Regan put forward the view that the discontinuation of this service in 2000 by the public bus monopoly, Dublin Bus, was in conflict with EU competition rules.
"I promised in the local elections that I would seek the re-instatement of the No 8 through EU intervention," he said.
"I followed up on that promise by lodging the complaint with the European Commission in Brussels against the Irish Government for allowing Dublin Bus to withdraw this service. The Commission took this complaint very seriously."
Cllr Regan met with senior officials in the Competition Directorate of the European Commission several times over the last two years to discuss the mater.
Following a final meeting earlier this year in Brussels the Commission intervened by writing to the Department of Transport. That intervention of the Commission ultimately brought about the change in policy.
"Dublin Bus has confirmed to me that it has applied for, and the Department of Transport has approved, the operation of the Dalkey to Dublin City Centre No. 8 bus service, which is to commence in the next few weeks."
Cllr Regan pointed out that while the route is slightly changed from the traditional number 8 Route, the service fulfils the essential object of the campaign to have a direct bus link between Dalkey and the City Centre.
The route will serve not only Dalkey and Sandycove, Monkstown and Blackrock, which featured on the traditional route, but other areas such as Glenageary, Sallynoggin and Mounttown, which he said "do not have an adequate service at present".
"The numbers 59 and 59A routes will also continue to link Dalkey, Killiney, Glenageary and Dun Laoghaire," Mr Regan concluded.Posted 4 years ago # -
Yep, that's the article alluded to over on Garaiste.com...and you bet that the regulars there criticised Councillor Raygun (sic) for the 59A mention, which to them showed that the honourable Councillor is a little out of touch with bus route changes in the area he represents...

Will ther be any bus stops on Barnhill Road and Caslepark Road?Posted 4 years ago #

There appears to be two stops on Castlepark Road, or at least two stage points.
The service is rather minimal; timetable here. No weekend service; seven buses a day in each direction, last bus out of town at 5:20 pm from Parnell Square (doesn’t say whether east or west; the Irish language version claims the bus leaves from Parnell Street.Posted 4 years ago # -
I see the new timetable as another attempt (much like the 7d) to have a service on their books, but in name only; to tell people they have buses from town to Dalkey but with little actual effort or effect !! I have written an e-mail to Dublin Bus but am not sure whether to expect a reply. I have explained to them that I, for one, used the old 8 regularly and was looking forward to using the new one only to find that there were only seven a day in either direction at completely irregular times. I can't think of any reason for the timetable choices other than that the service is to pacify our local councillor and the EU and that they will abolish it in two years time on grounds of it not being used, something I feel they are trying to orchestrate, much like the 7d. I have mentioned on numerous occasions to Dublin Bus and their drivers, my notion of sending every second 46a to Dalkey, a bus which often travels in convoy of 3 into town but travels onto Dalkey on its Nitelink route. I have never received a satisfactory answer from company or drivers. Any ideas ?Posted 4 years ago #

Extending the 46A would be pointless, essentialy there is nothing wrong with the 8 at this moment.
I ask you this:
Have you know a better service than you already had?
Answer Being, Yes! you know have the 59 which provides connections to the 7 and the 46A. You have the 7D which is not much use, but now you have the new number 8.
The reason DB cannot put many nore buses on tghis route is because they don't have them, these buses will be more than likely operated by EURO duties.
I do see your point about the 46A though! Never understood why they have to operate in convoy!

No, if I want to go into town, the service Dublin Bus are proposing is no better next week than this week and a lot worse than 2001 when the 8 was abolished. The extension of the 46a is not pointless – it would take people home to Dalkey without having to put on an extra route (the 8 for example). If there was one ticket to be bought from An Lar to Sandycove, the Dun Laoghaire connecting buses issue would not be an issue for me – however, I'm paying for a second journey because Dublin Bus can't provide an adequate service to my suburb. If there are genuinely not enough buses, then maybe fair enough but why no weekend service ? On a consistent basis, the extension of the 46a seems like a very logical idea which would solve lots of problems. Again, like I said, before, it's already being done on the Nitelink service. As it stands, the 8 route seems to me like something Dublin Bus are gearing up to see fail even before it starts.Posted 4 years ago #

A 46A extension is not logical...
It would add 15 minutes onto a journey that already takes the best part of an hour outside peak times.
What is logical would be to oeprate the 7D on a 40 minute frequency and get rid of the 8 and maybe pull one extra bus off the 46A, that seems more logical.
Even I can see that the magic "8" might not be around this time next yearPosted 4 years ago # -
Something tells me that the 8 might hang on where the 7D may not. You won't see the 7D run at a 40-minute frequency; if it were viable, then DB would have done it now instead of later, and by re-routing the 8 instead of coming up with the number 7D.
Startup routes? Look at all the twice- or thrice-daily new routes that DB's been putting on, many with frequencies already withdrawn (look at how the superfluous 118 has been having trips being pulled off it already).Posted 4 years ago # -
Except of course that the 8 isn't really a start-up route, instead it's one of the oldest routes in Dublin Bus' books . . . . and it's not superfluous, not to the people who want to catch it.Posted 4 years ago #
