I want to confess a controversial thing I did, in order to see what anyone else thinks of it.

Earlier today, I was on an inbound 46A when I realised that we had been sitting at the Stillorgan (Blakes) stop for an unusually long delay. On going downstairs to see why, I saw that the driver had left his cab to communicate with a severely disabled passenger who used a sort of alphabetic chart to communicate painstakingly with him. At about the 10 minute mark I started to feel that the driver was forgetting his 40 other passengers, so I said something to that effect to him (though not aggressively). He asked if I was for real. Maybe he was right to be shocked at my apparent callousness. What does anyone else think about my behaviour?

---At about the 10 minute mark I started to feel that the driver was forgetting his 40 other passengers......----

Are you sure that it was 10 minutes that the driver was dealing with the disabled passenger??

I know time seems to drag when one is waiting for something but I certainly find it difficult to believe that such an amount of time was spent at the stop assisting the passenger concerned.

Fair play to the driver for getting out to help anyhow.

At the end of the day, its a small chunk of time out of the day for such a good deed to somone who is less fortunate than most of the mobile travveling public.

Yea Dick,I can see where you`re coming from and if it was 10 mins then I reckon its beyond a reasonable delay.
However rather than givin the driver a verbal handbaggin perhaps U might have ascertained if there was something that YOU could have done to assist the Disabled Passenger.
Sometimes a fresh perspective can spot something that those involved have missed.
Disability and the rights of the Disabled is a thorny subject which tends to allow allsorts of Looney Stuff to sneak past into law.
The entire area simply has to be viewed in terms of what is possible in the context of a REASONABLE persons attempts to facilitate a disabled persons needs.
At some stage there has to be a cut-off point and perhaps that was reached in your case ?

Tessie and Alek, thank you for your views. I am reasonably certain that the delay was not less than 10 minutes. Having said that, I probably should have held my tongue a bit longer. I suppose I was cursing my luck at being on that particular bus in the heat.

    Therein lies another tale Richard.
The lack of appreciation by Bus Design Professionals of how quickly our climate has changed.
This climate change now sees us experiencing almost sub-tropical conditions on a regular basis now.
Think of the amount of RECENT journeys which see you boarding the bus wet to the skin after a torrential downpour only to find yourself being roasted alive by the Bus Heating system after 5 minutes on board.
The Driver is usually blamed for having switched the heat on which is only sometimes true.
The reality is that the present technology for Double Deck Heating and Ventilation is woefully inadequate and almost Stone Age when compared to the climate control systems now in common useage on basic family saloon cars.
The advances made in modern Coach Heating/Air Conditioning systems have NOT been moved forward into the service Bus sector and boy can one smell the consequences.
