I recall the 101 because it used to run adjacent to my aunt's former house close to Northside Shopping Centre. I believe that the re-route of the 27 via Northside SC and Priorswood en route to Clare Hall took a lot of its traffic away...and besides, running only to Harmonstown DART station jammed up the capacity thereof.

The current route 104 runs over much of the former route via Harmonstown, but does not run via Blunden Drive (taken over by the 42A/B), Priorswood and Darndale (route 27), but it still serves Northside...

This route was cancelled on Saturday 15th April 2000 along with the 300 and the 51A.

THey were replaced with the current 103, 104 routes though with better frequencies than at present. The 101 from my memory too was always busy and as Al said it does seem to be the rerouting of the route via Clare Hall that seem to kill it off.

The new route 101 via Clare Hall started just after the 27 cityswift route started (you'll see a note about it on the flyer issued to lauch the route) and its route was as follows.

Beaumont Hospital, Kilbarron Road, Kilmore Road, Bunratty Road, Oscar Traynor ROad, Malahide Road, Gracefield Road, Brookwood Avenue, Harmonstown Road, Springdale Road, Edenmore Green, Edenmore Grove, Edenmore Park, Endenmore Avenue, Tonglegee Road, Grange Road, (The route was then meant to turn left at where the 29A currently does, the roundabout though it was originally a normal T-junction) but however this road was not ready so it went up the Hole in the Wall Road, Balgriffin Road, Malahide Road (I assume it did a loop up to the Clare Hall Roundabout, maybe somebody might remember this, from Malahide Road - Darndale, Priorswood, Glin Road, Greencastle Road, Coolock Drive, Bunratty Road, Kilmore Road, Beaumont Hospital.

This route operated in both directions, however on Saturdays it only operated in the direction as written which to me seems a little silly due to the fact you could get from Donaghmede to Northside but could never get back, well at least quickly with one fare.

I do remember this route operating, the 104 also took the diversion via Donaghmede on a Sundays but by the April 1997 bus timetable both had reverted back to via Blunden Brive.

Going back to the issue at Donaghmede and the specific junction with Clare Hall. Before this opened the 29A did a seemingly dangerous u-turn at the Grange Road, where the old Grange Road used to turn and head towards Baldoyle. When the T-junction opened it went as current route to the Clare Hall Roundabout to turn around. However a strange terminus routing happened the weekend when they closed the grange road to install the current roundabout. THe 29A from the grange road, turned left up Ardara Avenue and then right onto Grangemore Road before terminating outside the school on the Grange Road. I can't remember the dates maybe somebody here will know them.

Sunday the 16th April 2000 saw some major changes actually. The 51A was cancelled though was quickly brought back, however it died off which is kind of logical for a route which served stops which had notices saying it was cancelled and Dublin Bus had issued service guides indicating its withdrawal to all the houses within its vacinity. Thus you get the present minimal timetable.

The 42A also changed on this date extended to Beaumont Hospital to cover the 101 route which probably shows that the route was needed. What followed was pharsical and I'm unsure whether it happens today but a lot of the extended 42a's were operated by two buses which left the city at the same time, then due to some Drivers bycotting the extension to Beaumont Hospital one would termiante at Blunden Drive while the other (usually operated by a Broadstone bus from my memory) would continue on to Beaumont. The other bus would wait at Blunden Drive for the Beaumont one to return and they would operate back to the city. So why get rid of the 101 at all??

THe 300 was also a seemingly silly service which also only operated one way. I can't see why any one-way service would work but DB needed something to do with the W class after the failure of Route 222. The 300 (OmniLink) started on Sunday 1st December 1996, and finished its days operated on many occasions by a variety of Double-Deckers due to unreliability of the W's.

I've probably gone on a bit too much, all that was asked was the date, but at least I've given that.

    Craig.
