14A/48A

I see the 14A and 48A are to be amalgamated into a single route because Luas has taken away passengers from both. I would agree that numbers on the 14A are down in recent weeks, but I am concerned that the new route will not serve Upper Rathmines Road, which would then end up busless like Leinster Road. Has anybody seen the details of this?

It would still serve those areas.

The plan is for both the 14 and 14A to run via their current routing to Ballinteer, then continue via the 48A (inbound) routing Broadford Road, Ballinteer Avenue, Ballinteer Road, Dundrum Village to the LUAS Interchange, where they would terminate.

So in effect they would be covering both their existing routing, and working as a Ballinteer to Dundrum "feeder".

Plan is for 10min service all day from 0630 to 2130, then 15mins.

Still subject to consultation with the unions at the moment, of course there will be no consultation with the public . . .

For my money, it's not a bad idea.

How would the service lost on the Ranelagh-Milltown-Dundrum corridor be replaced? The 48A is the most frequent bus on that route, far more frequent than the 44, 44B and 44C. Passengers cannot get to the Luas from Dundrum Road in between Dundrum and Milltown, nor can they reach the Luas from where Milltown Road intersects with Clonskeagh Road.

Very bad idea, getting rid of bus service simply because the Luas runs parallel. That's like taking bus service off the Rock Road/Merrion Road corridor simply because the DART runs parallel (well...they did reduce it by getting rid of the 8, but the 7 and 45 still run frequently). Still and all, in places like New York City, there never are buses removed from a certain road artery simply because a subway runs underneath or an elevated railway runs overhead. Bad idea on DB's part, especially when it comes to the Ranelagh/Milltown/Dundrum corridor.

I am outraged! How can they scrap the 48a! I'm that guy who uses it on a daily basis (see 48a best in town posting in the archives) I am writing this absolutley fuming! The 48a only runs parallel for a short portion of the luas route - Ranelagh and Dundrum. It is the lifeblood of areas such as the eastern parts of Milltown, Winday Arbour, Clonskeagh, Eglinton Road and Sandford. The 14a extention is no consolation! I'll either have to walk all the way to Dundrum, or get the luas and pay TWICE. That's another thing that hasn't been thought about. INTEGRATED TRAVEL. Double taxation in effect for people like me who need this bus. You won't be able to get into DDrum when the Shopping Centre opens, so why are they removing a vital artery into this new heart, to speak biologically. I am going to do everything in my power as a layman to prevent this outrage. I urge you all to bombard your local TDs with angry letters. Let's save this excellent service before this bloody city strangles itself in traffic!
