Re-use of old bus route numbers
(22 posts)-
Does anyone know why DB never seems to re-use the numbers of long-extinct bus routes? I can see why using a recently disused number like 8 for another route could cause confusion, but there is little danger that a bus numbered 4, 9 or 12 would be mistaken for the long-dead routes which had those numbers. Why not let's see a new 4, 9 or whatever which goes anywhere DB wants it to go?Posted 4 years ago #

I have the thought at the back of my mind that this topic may have been discussed on this list some time ago. Is this true or just false deja-vu?Posted 4 years ago #

Add the 46 to the list of dead routes. It's been replaced by the 7B.

Everybody knows that 121 or 239 sound far more exoitic than 4 or 12. Dublin Bus's policy is to entice new passengers by introducing catchy-sounding route numbers and dispensing with the old bland 11s and 13bs 45b64a23112f anybody?Posted 4 years ago #

Well it seems with the opening of harristown there will be a few changes. The 17A will be changed to 4 the 29A will be changed to 29, the 129 will be changed to 29A & the 27B will be extended to Dublin Airport via Coolock Lane Santry ave & Ballymun road! **taking from smartgroups**

The 46B should revert to what it used to be. ie. 64A. Even after all these years the number 46B causes confusion.Posted 4 years ago #

Nah...make it the 64. That's what should have happened with that route originally; there were the 64 and 64A, the routes identical apart from the 64 running through Ballsbridge and on Anglesea Road and the 64A running on the current route 46B route.
Of course, what with the mad-cap attitude of DB lengthening routes in recent years, I must say that I am rather surprised that they didn't extend the 11A beyond Mather Road North into Kilmacud using the former 64/64A and current 46B route (North Avenue, South Avenue, Trees Road, Redesdale Road)...after all, they took the 11 and extended it to Kilmacud, eliminating the former route 62.
For my part, I'm surprised that DB hasn't gone all-numeric? If anything's confusing, it's having excessive branches of a numbered route denoted by too many alpha-suffixes. Even worse than that are bus routes that are denoted by an alpha-suffixed number for no reason (e.g. 20B, 29A, 46A)...
Oh well; I suppose conditions like that serve as "warning signs" as to what kind of management is in place...Posted 4 years ago # -
i wish db would make their route better

Does anyone miss the old 47/47A/47B route? When the 15C took over how come Ringsend got landed with the service? Donnybrook was in charge of the 47s.

Simple answer there: the route 15 series with all their alpha suffixes operated out of Ringsend, so when the 47 series got merged into the 15 series, it got switched to Ringsend and Donnybrook could write off the service.
May as well re-hash the list of retired route numbers, excluding alpha-suffixed branches (I will include those routes that currently exist but only have an alpha-suffix equivalent): 4, 6, 8, 9, 12, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, 34, 35, 36, 46, 47, 48, 52, 54, 55, 56, 58, 60, 61, 62, 64, 72, 74, 80, 81, 82, 85, 88, 91, 101, 113, 155, 250. Interesting list.Posted 3 years ago # -

Why was the 80 scrapped? Didn't it go to Luttrelstown/Clonsilla area?
[posted by: busfreak]Posted 3 years ago # -
Yes it went to Luttrelstown/Clonsilla but at the time it carried two people in the morning peak and two in the evening peakPosted 3 years ago #

The 80 was eliminated in favour of the circle-route 250, which disconnected the Porterstown and Luttrellstown areas from the city centre, but connected them directly to Clonsilla, Blakestown, Castleknock (north) and Blanchardstown. The 250 was eliminated in favour of the present-day route 239, which is more versatile, connecting Blanchardstown Centre with Liffey Valley Centre, serving Ballydowd, Esker Lane, Arthur Griffith Park, Adamstown Road, Lucan Village, Barnhill Cross, Westmanstown, Luttrellstown, Porterstown et al (the 239 didn't serve all those areas until route 207 was merged into it).

Donnybrook have far too many routes anyway. Why not gve the likes of Conyngham Road a chance they have very little routs. Donnybrook don't need to put their old routes back on the road.Posted 3 years ago #

I think they're trying to clear out Conyngham Road so that they can flog it to some developer.

Ah yes, bump up the DB "surplus" and continue to raise fares notwithstanding...clever tactic.Posted 3 years ago #
