The 17 route

Am I the only person who has grown to detest the 17 buses??
They're timtabled to take 35-40mins travelling between Kimmage Road West
and Belfied. 70-80 mins would be more accurate in morning traffic.

Add to that the fact that for some reason, you can get a lovely double-decker bus taking you
to college in the morning (watching out for the mythical bus that's supposed to
appear at 08:50) and yet when most people are looking to get home from college after 4pm, the
(single-decker) bus is filled with school-kids and you end up having to stand all the way...
that's if you can get on the bus at all.

    Disgruntled,
    ~K.

No, you are not. I abandoned any attempts to get it from Belfield and opted for the 10 or 46A and a 30 min walk. It is almost invariably single-decker whenever I want it and gets stuck somewhere in Dundrum. A couple of years ago I was teaching in Belfield and a student appeared 2 hours late for class. She said she'd spent 2 hours standing in the rain and 3 17s had lumbered by and none would stop to pick her up!!! The poor kid. I knew exactly what she meant. Waiting for a bus for any distance under 3 miles is utterly pointless. Keep your 85p and walk - it may appear before you get to where you're going - but then again it may not and you'll have the satisfaction of beating it!! (like I do the 18...)

That 17 route is a shambles! I was getting the 17 from UCD to Blackrock one saturday morning for an exam. I was 25 mins waiting for the bus and then when it did arrive, the driver stopped opened the door and asked me where I was going. When I said Blackrock he replied I'm only going to Vincents hospital, immediately shut the doors and sped off!!! Vincents isn't even on his route! It was the most ignorant thing any bus driver has ever done to me in my life. I don't think I will ever cease to be amazed at the arrogance of dublin bus twoards it's customers. You wouldn't see it happening in a privately run company.

Actually, there is alternate service on route 17 going to St. Vincent's Hospital all right...buses going there don't serve Blackrock at all. (It would have been a great idea to call the St. Vincent's route by number 17A, but funny enough, there's a 17A on the north side which runs between Finglas and Kilbarrack...doesn't make sense, does it??)

Last Tuesday night I went to visit frinds in Terenure and arrived at the bus stop at a quarter to eleven that night to get a number 17 back to clonskeagh. Can someone tell me what time the last 17 runs because I gave up at quarter past 12 and had to stay at my friends house

The 17 bus route is absolutely ridiculous. Half the time they dont turn up at all. one day i was waiting for two hours for a bus from ucd. Another day i was waiting for a bus from dundrum to ucd. The bus was due at about 10.15 but it didnt arrive till 10.55 and i had an exam at 11!! I am absolutely sick of that bus route!

I'm another disgruntled member of the population when it comes to the service (or lack thereof) of Dublin Bus. The Number 17 service is appalling. It seems to pass through Dublin's version of the Bermuda Triangle because the buses so often don't appear. I'm off to buy a car this weekend, not out of choice but out of sheer frustration at the lack of a service offered by Dublin Bus.
What I find hilarious is the name's they give to all these buses too - I mean the Stillorgan Flyer! Talk about blatant false advertising!
Good Luck to those of you who have to continue getting the 17, my thoughts will be with you!

"STILLORGAN FLYER"...?!? Honestly, I didn't know that there were trains going to Stillorgan, what universe was that...? You can't logically give a bus the name "flyer" unless it has its own dedicated roadway.
