why are DB replacing some newer buses but leaving some RH buses in service.
The MV are only 97D/98D buses but being replaced by 94D AD class
    this doesnt make sense

a> because the company is banned from increasing the fleet total, so they are increasing capacity by replacing minibuses and single-deckers with new double-decks.

b> the MV-class minis you talk about are LOATHED by DB - unreliable, way to expensive to maintain, they can't wait to see the back of them!

Currently the remaining MVs are Phibsboro are advertised for sale in the trade press, however the new double-deckers which will cascade single-decks to replace them are sitting idle due to Industrial Relations issues (the cleaners object to double-decks replacing minis, as they will have more work to do).

Meanwhile the rest of the double-deck order (the other 2 for Ringsend and 12 for Donnybrook) are trapped in the Transbus factory in Belfast, which is in Administration following the collapse of the Mayflower group.

The cleaners issue is not quite so cut and dried.
The introduction of the new AV`s substantially increases the ACTUAL work content of the night-service.
The cumulative result of several productivity deals within BAC Maintenance has seen its efficiency levels raised to well beyond that which prevails, for example,in the UK.
This means that there is no slack available to be taken up to facilitate any expansion in fleet or individual unit-workload.
For example compare a Fuel-Vacuum-Engine Oil Check-Interior Condition check job on an MV and then do the same spec on an AV.
Twice the length,Two decks,Twice the Fuel Capacity etc.Multiply that by say 10 and one can see a definite increase in workload.
The real question is why on earth any manager would attempt to simply slip the change in and hope nobody woyld spot the difference.
A bit of preparation and forewarning would have avoided this, but then.......
And while Im at it,over 10 years ago I read an article in a UK Bus Engineering magazine which went into the Mini-Bus engineering requirement in great detail.
Using data mainly from the London region the figures were scary in extremis.
Essentially the Light CV based conversions were very cheap and compared well until they reached their SECOND birthday, when some secret switch appeared to be thrown which caused them to self destruct.
The graph simply went off scale and approaching Fours old the things simply were a money pit.
This reality was not marque specific and covered all Chassis/Bodywork combinations.
We luckily did not rush headlong as some of our senior managers would have liked, with a half-cocked idea that a MiniBus Driver could be paid MiniBus Wages.
Luckily thanks to somebody recognizing Madness when they saw it we drew back.
The rest is history...or maybe not.....as Stelios (EasyBus) is now trying to prove....Be careful Stello my old mate.....You wouldment be the First Greek to loose his gifts at the gate....

    TO VINNY
DB are not "crap" as you describe, they operate very well under the constraints of this government and despite their failings in some areas I still think that the service is excellent. The only people who are "crap" are the government and you.

    Gavin, my good friend.
I know that you do not disagree with what I am saying, But if you do, I reccomend you e-mail Vinny. Together you can wallow in your dim view of a good public transport network while coking the planet as you drive everywhere in your Volkswagen
