Temporary route 31D installed during DART weekend work on Howth line

    Story here.

I had briefly misunderstood this as a partial resurrection of the old route 88, but no such luck. It appears to run from Kilbarrack Road and up Dublin Road into Howth Station. (It seems to me that the use of the electronic destination signs more easily facilitates the creation of a new alpha suffix division of the route, as I thought during their widespread introduction.)

This certainly bespeaks a big mess at Irish Rail. How come they cannot do maintenance on the DART without shutting down service on the weekend?? Even if it is that same platform lengthening that the south end is getting, there is no reason at all to shut the line down completely.

Without getting into a debate, what is happening is not just platform lengthening, but also the overhead cabling is being replaced in it's entirety.

Health and safety would not allow single line working while this was being done. Times have changed since the DART was originally introduced.

The work is on schedule (or maybe slightly ahead) which does not suggest that there is "a big mess at Irish Rail". In fairness to them, they notified the public of this months ago, so no-one can claim they were not advised of this change.

Equally fairly, I did point out that other electrified railways do not have to shut down the whole line when effecting repairs to either catenary wire or additions to platforms.

Why indeed is the catenary wire wearing out so rapidly? Are the repair implements that far behind the technology as to have health-&-safety jump all over and thus induce them to shut down the entire line, or is this political in nature at its core...?
