When Platform11 had its first meeting in the Bankers Club in Jan 2003, we asked the people who showed up that day, "what would you like to see happen on the rail network, in terms of operations and future development?". We made a list and it became the agenda for the first year of P11's lobbying.

Well, it is time to put this question to Irish rail users and taxpayers. What do you believe should be the most important issues/development projects concerning rail transport in Ireland in the years ahead? (this includes heavy rail, light rail and metros). This will help us in determining future issues to be highlighted in the media and in government.

Public transport users are never asked what they want, as the decision process is always implemented between consultants and the Government (most of whom do not even use public transport) - this is our chance to make our voice heard for a change.

To make it easy here are the list of suggestion thus far:
(feel free to add any which are not there but you believe should be)

    Clockface Inter-City Departures
    Cork - Improved Commuter Service
    Cork - Midleton Reopening
    DART - Extension to Airport
    DART - Extension to Drogheda
    DART - Extension to Kildare
    DART - Extension to Maynooth
DART - Phoenix Park Tunnel Route (increased integration and capacity)
    Electrify Belfast-Dublin Route
    Electrify Dublin-Cork Route
Increase Capacity of Commuter Routes in Leinster
    Integrated Ticketing
    LUAS - Connect Lines A and B
    LUAS to Cherrywood/Shanganagh
    LUAS to Docklands
    LUAS to Lucan
    Metro - Orbital
    Metro to Airport/Swords
    Mullingar-Athlone (for improved Dublin-Galway service)
    Navan Commuter Service (reopening Clonsilla-Navan)
    Navan-Drogheda Line Passenger Upgrade
    Sligo Suburban Service (Sligo-Ballymote)
The Dublin Rail Interconnector (maximum integration and capacity)
Western Rail Corridor (WRC) - Entire Reopening
    WRC - Athenry-Claremorris Reopening
    WRC - Athenry-Ennis Reopening
WRC - Athenry-Tuam Reopening (Galway Commuter Service)
    WRC - Claremorris-Collooney Reopening

    Many thanks

Would that be between Cork and Galway, or between Dublin and Cork and Dublin and Galway...? Perhaps IE can buy the InterCity 225 on the cheap and re-gauge it since GNER seems to have given up on it :-P (but that would require installing signalling beyond even the mini-CTC, electrifying, and double-tracking the whole MGWR for the Galway route at least)

(BTW, didn't you know that IE considers 90 mph as "high speed" anyway :- )

This does raise a very interesting point, that being with Ireland hosting the EU presidency right now and Ahern being the EU's lackey and all, why has he not lobbied for more spending on railway transportation to counter the evil effects of going over the greenhouse-gas-emissions quota...?

Interesting that a DART extension to Maynooth was listed in the Top 10. IMHO, that would be an error; the Arrows and other DMUs are actually more comfortable than the elder and even newer DART stock, and IIRC there are no toilets on the DART EMUs. Not to mention that the average commuter is not as concerned about the operating costs of his conveyance but rather the reliability of the service—something that the Arrows themselves do not detract from (but perhaps the 2900-class does?)

Or is the DART proposal for Maynooth intended to foment Maynooth-Greystones service? (And to think that the Strategic Rail Review of little over a year ago advised the removal of wires on the Bray-Greystones segment.) I don't see a one-seat ride on a WC-lacking train to be an advatage over a two-seat ride upon which there is one segment that has such facilities.

IMHO, though, my "foamer dream" was to have connected the Maynooth-Dublin services with the Harcourt Street service that is currently Luas Line B, but serving Bray as during its heavy-rail days. This would have been accomplished 30 to 40 years ago, and would have used the former GNR DMUs converted into EMUs and powered by third-rail (thus allowing for a smaller-diameter tunnel and lower clearances under bridges), with a tunnel linking Broadstone and Harcourt Street (cut-and-cover in the areas away from the Liffey bed of course). Such a project to have been done in conjunction with Howth-Bray third-rail electrification via the former GNR and D&K/DSER route. (This would have allowed the Carlisle Pier tracks to have remained open as well...ain't it nice to dream...)

if you look at the proposed strategic rail route map set out by the dto,
(http://www.dto.ie/fig7.pdf) it does look quite good and may be the end for dublins transport nightmares. but the question is, will they evr build it? and all of it? and not make a bad job of it! in my opinion, we need a new government, who could sort this out.
