Is it true that these two routes are to be 'merged' this month (a la 19A)? Can anyone tell me the logic behind this strategy?

I've heard about this alright. This was first mentioned in a report done for Dublin Bus by Scott Wilson. It stated that routes 83 & 134 should be merged to get rid of on-street parking and to provide an extra cross link route in the city. Scott Wilson stated that the routes should only part serve each other - just say Route 83 only going as far as Botanic Gardens the 134 route and route 134 only going as far as Kennilworth Square on the south side. This section of the route would have a double frequency. But if I've heard correct DB have no plans to increase frequency but just to join the two routes together which is a holy joke because people on the 134 might stay on it until Dame Street which means anybody waiting on College STreet may find it difficult getting on.

You ask me, this spells the end for City Imp service. Time to trade in those little buses for the big double-deckers again, because the only place that the Imps will be useful is somewhere in the countryside. This all appears to be part of some odd grand scheme to eliminate as many City Centre termini as possible—which isn't bad for parking, but horrible for on-time bus performance (which is non-existent, anyway, but there IS an ideal, which DB seems to dispense with completely).

As for routes that SHOULD merge...since DB broke the 13 and 13A off from the 13B on the south side, the 13B should be made a south-side-running leg of the 120 (the City Imps would be better at manœuvering around the narrow roads in the Beechwood estate in Ranelagh than either single- or double-deckers). Also, since the 120 is, partially, a restoration of the old route 12, this would restore running between Cabra and Palmerston Park (especially since the 14 and 14A don't go to the north side anymore, but with all this odd "route-merging", who knows what's in the murky DB future)...
