Car-Free Day

In case any of you missed this, Dublin Corporation are trying to quietly scrap this years car-free day.Posted 7 years ago #

That's horrible. Dublin's up there with NYC now in terms of how bad the traffic jams are, weekday and weekend. NYC's last "car-free day" was on January 8th, 1996, when almost four feet of snow fell and Mayor Rudolph Giuliani prohibited cars from entering and leaving the city as well as driving around on the streets until the snow could be cleaned up. Now Dublin can't afford a car-free day all of a sudden...?
On another note, I just read in the Irish Railway News newsletter that CIE wants to scrap freight train service, even though it made a profit last year, instead focusing on "passenger service" (with whatever little focus they currently conduct). Has CIE gone completely mad?!? Why don't they take a cue from other countries and run long freight trains a few times a week instead of short freights if they're worried about capacity. So, fewer buses, no freight trains AND more tractor-trailers...looks like it's shaping up to be a fun day in Dublin...
One more thing...do you not answer your email?

All may not be lost as regards Car-Free Day, after all. The Corporation may not be going ahead with it, but a lot of Dubliners reckon they're going to have it anyway.
More information on this over the coming days.
