LUAS FARE LEVELS
(6 posts)-
It is now revealed that ConneX/LUAS are proposing a Fare Structure some 35% HIGHER than Bus Atha Cliath`s and 19% above DART levels.
Reports in todays media indicate a level of "Discussion" ongoing between the Dept of Transport and ConneX RPA on the possibility of these Higher Fares "Deterring" poorer people from using LUAS.
Presumably this Departmental Concern is directed mainly at LINE A where the po`folks already have to endure smaller Tram Sets whilst the More Affluent "Oul Protestant Solicitor" sub-group in the LINE B catchment area enjoy the spacious leg room and broadsheet folding space of THEIR LUAS....
Nice to see however that LUAS/RPA had all of this Fare Level stuff sorted out well in advance of Start-Up day,not to mention the system integration....OOoops sorry ...I completely forgot about the CONSULTANTS report on Integrated Ticketing....silly me....have to ensure we get value for that €26 MILLION (!!) cost then...???Posted 4 years ago # -
Did you post this on the Platform 11 message board yet? Maybe they won't jump all over you like they jump all over me when it comes to any hint of Luas-bashing. Sorry, but there has to be a higher level of credibility before the Platform 11 people get my support…

Sure did your Al`ness.
I remain avidly anti LRT in the Dublin context but the Damn thing is here now so lets get the most from it.
However this is precisely what we are doing with our present Bus service rushing off to spend nearly a Billion Euro whilst refusing point blank to spend the trifling sums to allow the PRESENT bus system to achieve great advances..
An IRISH solution to a relatively common problem...Posted 4 years ago # -
I agree with you, Alek Smart.
LUAS SCHMUAS.
That's privateers (oops, sorry) Privatisation for you. Look at all that competition and the cheaper fares.
Well Done Séamus.
Now, how about the same for Dublin Bus? Bring in the privateers and increase the fares!!!!Posted 4 years ago # -
Look at all that competition and the cheaper fares
Veering off-topic a tad, what about Stagecoach's tactics in that regard, when they were allowed to destroy competition by offering free service in many cities over in the Isle of Britannia…? For my part, I'm happy that no such chaos was permitted to occur in Eire, but that is the real face of competition.
No, the private-contract thingy is only with an eye towards lower-wage and almost-zero-medical-coverage operations, not to mention no bus operations division for (whatever CIE's successor will be called). I suppose we just have to stay tuned to observe what depths this will plunge into…
As for Luas, anyone have an idea as to how many tram sets would have to be coupled together to get the passenger capacity they are claiming to be shooting for? Also, how shall they indeed enforce a DB-like fare structure, if the claims of their using such a fare pattern are true…?Posted 4 years ago # -
AND
Where do they expect the passengers to come from?
I reckon that most of the LUAS passengers will transfer from using the bus. The motorists will still sit in their cars. Wait and see.
There is not one LUAS going to operate to and from Blanchardstown or the Airport. That is the reason for my opposition to LUAS. There is no reaon why, in the interim, the bus services couldn't be beefed up with penalties or levies for motorists who insist on driving into the city centre.
However, and this might have something to do with convoys as well, the Department of Transport insist that there can be no improvement to a bus route unless they approve it. That means that even providing an extra secheduled bus in the evenings will have to await approval, while the Minister decides that I should wait another year while he thinks of geting a privateer to operate on the route.
I know that this might be seen as an unreasonable argument to use against the LUAS but it will be seen that LUAS (in its present planned form) will solve very few problems relative to the investment made in the system.Posted 4 years ago #
