Left without transportation
(19 posts)-
I have had 3 hip replacements and have relied on the number 8 bus to get me around the Dalkey and co. dublin vicinities keeping medical appointsments, etc. I am at a complete loss with this service. Please please reinstate the number 8 bus. It was such a historic bus line and I dont know who had the right without informing the dalkey community about it. Please come back Number 8 busPosted 4 years ago #

Im afraid that DB does not care about that at present, unless a large contingency of passengers especially from the Dalkey and Sandycove areas petition 59 Upper OConnell Street requesting re-instatement of route 8.
Despite the fact that the DART does not serve the same areas as the bus, and further despite the fact that the re-routed 59 and 59A provide neither a one-seat ride north of Dun Laoghaire nor a free transfer, DB will not expand direct bus service between Dalkey and the city centre beyond the current route 7D service without the aforementioned petition specifying the restoration of route 8.Posted 4 years ago # -
Having had the pleasure of working the 8 on occasion, I have to admit that I spent a good deal of my time driving a relatively empty bus. On an outbound journey, I would often have no passengers remaining after Dun Laoghaire. While I accept that my employer is supposed to be providing a public service and "serving ALL of the community", the 8 was embarrassingly quiet and clearly making a loss. However, there was a public outcry after the 8 was axed and DB's ignorance of this was unforgivable. Just wait until the privateers get their greasy little hands on our bus routes though. The 8 won't be the last victim. "Business sense" will be appearing more and more often, I can assure you.

What times of day did you work the 8?
Also am curious as to how the 59/59A does in the 8's stead, and where the most passengers from the 8 would boardPosted 4 years ago # -
At off-peak hours, I always found the 8 to be an easy route. Incidentally, most of the Dalkey-bound users were in posession of free travel passes.

the first version of the 59 was ok . just you had to wait a long time for it as it was a one bus route ( and still is ) .
i was on the 59 mini bus when it broke down leaving no bus running in the Dalkey area .thats why there should be 2 buses on each of the 59 and 59A . then when the 59A was added usually run by a VL it used to be at least 10 minutes late meaning that the minibus on the 59 would get full at certain times of the day stranding people waiting for a bus to killiney .
actually mentioning the 59A i hear that it is about to be withdrawn . well at least mackintosh park is served by the 7A . lets hope we see a few more of them being run for the people there .
as for the rest of it i hope we may even see another WV apearing on the 59 and less gap between each bus .
i used the 8 since i was a kid . i know that it is far form the busiest route in Dublin but i am sure they could have maybe 2 buses in the morning from dalkey 2 from town and 2 in the afternoon form town and dalkey or something like that . reduce capacity without cutting the route off entirely . the 7D that replaced the 8 is a joke .
marjorie is perfectly right . they cut the 8's without any consultation . i only found out when a nun told my mother when she was on an 8 comming home from town . i posted about this on another message board and got told that dublin bus leafleted the dalkey area . well i checked with a few of my neighbours none of us got leaflets .
it is a mis nomer too to think everyone in Dalkey lives near the dart.
also i was told that Dublin bus gets well paid when people used the pass .
i think dublin bus as oat dalkey and said o yeah this is the place where they are all rich and have 2 cars in the drive . they don;t need a bus service. well call into my house and i can show you one person at least you needs a bus service .
cheers

The people with money plus cars argument is not a valid one when it comes to withdrawing bus service. People in Pasadena, California are well-heeled and well-wheeled, but that city has several bus routes plus a brand-new LRT line (the Gold Line). Just mentioned it as a comparison to Dalkey...

Hi,
My husband and I are also left without transport in Dalkey. It is beyond frustrating and annoying. He works in the city centre on the weekends, so he has to take an 8 ("reinstated" to serve no DARTS on weekends due to "construction work"). However, this is very sporatic and then he has to get another bus in Dunlaoghaire to take him to the city centre. It often take him 2 hours to reach his work, and them same for the journey home.
We are not well-heeled. We are a normal, young couple with no car and have to make due with the scraps Dublin Transport offers. I did write a stongly worded letter to S. Brennan when they announced the DART closure (Announced 2 weeks before it happened! Why can't they work at night! What are they doing anyway - I don't see any change whatsoever!?!) Ok maybe that is another thread all together.
If I wasn't 6 months pregnant, I would seriously consider getting a petition together to reinstate the 8. The Irish people are so complacent - we let them get away with murder.
AAAAaaarrrghhhh!

Susan - Is cycling an option for your husband?
Would probably need to avail of a shower at work though some places don't/won't have one.
According to the DTO's journey planner (http://www.dto-journetplanner.ie) it is 14km from Dalkey DART to Tara St.
I cycle the same distance to/from work and it takes me 40 mins. I cycle reasonably fast and sweat a good bit but it's quicker than bus or train and often car.Posted 4 years ago # -
Yes Damien, but it's far more dangerous with all the gobs**te know all drivers who insist on using their mobile phones while reading the paper when they are driving.
Good luck to you. I gave up cycling years ago when mobile phones became more popular.
I thought the DB slogan was "Serving the ENTIRE community". If you have to resort to the bike then that's not service and there's nothing "entire" about the community.Posted 4 years ago # -
re - I will admit that I've gotten a little less comfortable on the roads in the last few years. Thankfully some things have improved for cyclists e.g. cycle lanes (I know not everyone likes them but I love the one on the Navan Road between Phibs and Ashtown).
I have changed my riding attitude a bit - I'll yield if I have ANY doubt about my safety. I also wear a bright yellow jacket and have loads of lights. OTOH, I do understand why people are scared to cycle. It's a pity, especially considering traffic in Dublin and the health benefits.
TrafficWatch is a good weapon to have though the Gardai have failed to contact me about reports I've made.Posted 4 years ago # -
why doesnt the 8 be re-introoduced butr with an extended route to ballybrack/shankill via avondale road???? this would also help sort out that mess of a bus the 7 and allow for more 7's to become 7Bs or 58's during the day???

Ha,
I used to live in Dalkey where the assumption by both DB and IE is "well if they can afford to live there what do they need public transport". It has to be the worst place to live if you dont have a car.
DB serves its drivers and accountants not the public.
Susan, I hope someone sorts this mess out. The 8 is missed badly.
Good luck!!!

But if DB serves its drivers, how come that proposals for privatisation exist and that privately-operated routes are around now? Perhaps that should read "DB serves the whims of the politicians and not the public"...

In the name of God, couldn't DB have put the no.8 bus back on for weekends while the DART upgrade is going on? I think that the failure to do so was callous in the extreme. Eternal sheme on DB for this betrayal.Posted 4 years ago #

on the weekends there is a double decker that goes from Dalkey to Dun Laoghaire, why dont they just extend that into town as the old 8
