    I do not.

I take it you mean the new Harristown facility?

    Oh Al.

You wouldn't say that if you knew the stroke that Mr. Brennan has pulled against Dublin Bus and by extension the travelling public.

The garage was planned by Dublin Bus to cater for the continually expanding demands on its services, and the planned (and indeed currently in progress) massive expansion of housing in the north Dublin / Fingal area.

During 1999 and 2000, apart from replacing buses, the company had added more than 150 additional buses into the fleet. Some more extras were added in 2001, but then it halted, as every garage, including the redeveloped Broadstone, was bursting at the seams.

The company had anticipated this, and seeing as the demand would continue to rise (new services needed, plus additional buses to maintain existing schedules as congestion got worse) a new depot was planned. Harristown was approved and funding loans approved in 2000 by the then minister Mary O'Rourke. It took several months for the land to be purchased, and a couple of years for planning permission etc. The sod was turned last year by Seamus Brennan.

The depot is nearly ready, but suddenly - bingo - it is to be used to both replace the Broadstone Garage, and also to reduce the number of vehicles at other city garages. Harristown will be used to house the existing buses, not cater for any expansion.

Broadstone is being removed from Dublin Bus, and given to DIT for a new college campus. (an alignment will be preserved through it for LUAS/Metro/whatever just in case - as Dublin Bus had themselves left the alignment clear).

Note the announcment by the Government of the move of us Eireann headquarters from Broadstone to Mitchelstown also . . .

So the end result is, Dublin Bus are having a large, prime property taken from them, and moving the same vehicles into a new garage, the mortgage and construction costs of which they will be paying back for some time to come.

There may be space for a small number of additional buses, but in reality the idea of this depot being used for expansion - it was supposed to allow the fleet to expand by 250 - has been dropped.

At the same time, and without prior warning, 36 new double-decks which had been purchased in late 2003 for fleet expansion were suddenly reverted to "replacements" - the extra journeys they had been operating on key routes were dropped, and older vehicles were withdrawn against them.

A HQ source tells me this is due to intervention by the Department of Finance.

The problem is that Dublin Bus, being state run, is unable to stand up and shout about this sleight of hand and policy reversal by the government.

I'm sure when Harristown is opened by An Taoiseach or Seamus, they will issue a statement referring to the vast expansion of housing in Fingal, and how this brave government is investing money in this new facility to meet this need.

    B*****ks.

The same buses, just moved from another garage, and orders from on high to cut back on services. *That* is the truth, and you won't find it in any press release.

Fnally, for the person who enquired bout the routes moving:

    Harristown gets the 11, 11A, 11B, 13, 13A, 20B, 27, 40, 40A, 40B, 40C, 41, 41A, 41B, and various outer routes like 230, 33A/B etc.

The artics move to Harristown and operate the 11/A instead of the 10 (the 11 extended to Ballymun).

The 10 moves to Donnybrook and gets the drivers and buses formerly used on the 11.

The 78A and 79 move from Conyngham Road to Summerhill.

The 123 moves from Broadstone to Summerhill.

The 19/A move from Broadstone to Phibsboro.

All the "euro duty" extra buses currently in Broadstone move to Harristown.

There may be some others, but that's all I can remember offhand.

    Nice reply S O S.
However it is not to be taken as certain that for example the 11 route drivers will move to the 10`s or vice versa.
Many may well opt to travel to the new garage with the route.
I fully cncur with your points about this being a snow-job.
It is yet another example of this Minister leading a charmed life.
There is for example the public perception that the public will have 25% EXTRA services post Tendering....Not so all that the Mans plan ensures is a transfer of ownership of the 25%.
When taken together with the Harristown scheme the reality is that both dept of Finance and Transport are actively seeking to reduce spending on public transport in the Dublin region in the anticipation of INCREASED private sector funding.
However this Private money will not arrive UNLESS guarantees of Profitability are in place..The question on many peoples lips is "Have these Guarantees already been given" and to whom.....
