Just posted on the DB web site. All fares go up by 5 cents. The fare-by-stage system remains in effect—nothing innovative, like perhaps a flat fare…

Innovative...!..Al you forget that when the Euro was introduced Bus Atha Cliath simultaneously announced a very desirable rebalancing of the fare Structure which would have seen the basic fare covering up to a 7 stage journey for €1 (One Journey=One Coin).
Like all such schemes there would have been losers too,for anybody making a 3 stage or lesser journey would have been paying a 20c premium...However the great bulk of those making 4 to 7 stage journey would have benefited greatly.
The main benefit would have been the virtual elimination of the bizzarre and gut wrenching emotional turmoil which many passengers display as they root, burrow, extract and slowly deposit the vast array of coinage lining their pockets/handbags/purses/wallets/undergarments.
This simple alteration would have improved our dwell times beyond belief at no extra cost.....
However some dunderhead of a local polititian got wind of the iniquitious extra 20c on the lowest fare and immediately played to the help-the-poor-traveller audience, which unfortunately included the Chairman of CIE.
Once the Political "Big Schtick" had been produced the CIE governing elite retreated cowering into their lair pausing just long enough to Instruct BAC management to REstructure the simple improvement and to give the Poor Oul Befuddled Dubberliners two Fare-Free days in compo...before returning to a Euro cent version of the byzantine fare-stage system which we continue to use today.
It was little more than an abdication of good management practice and one which continues to delay and hamper ANY attempt by driving staff to offer speedy and efficient transport.

How many three-stage riders do you get anyway? and indeed, how many pay the three-stage fare and ride beyond, often well beyond…? You could walk three stages just as easily, if it is not raining…and besides, senior citizens, who would actually need to ride three stages more than any other passengers, do often have their travel cards, rendering the point moot somewhat.

That is utterly certain. I recall how high dwell times got when OPO came in and the conductors were removed. It was almost intolerable. I often prayed for a minimum-fare bus to come along…(and speaking of the minimum-fare trips, they never denoted in the old CIE Dublin District timetables just which ones those were, really…)

But look what we got for it, namely a three-fold increase of greenhouse gas emissions above what was supposed to be Eire’s quota until 2010. If fines are levied by the EU on that issue, that means that capital funds in all areas of transportation will be raided to pay them…and no good will come of that.

Yeah, I never heard of this plan…and to be frank, it should not have been abandoned IMHO but instead expanded across the board, even into the mysterious outer suburban reaches of DB service (I say mysterious because DB, until that article linked above came out, has not posted the outer suburban fares on their web site). What indeed would be so hard about throwing a Euro coin in the fare box and riding—that would eliminate the expense of maintaining the paper tickets for the journey and all too. (Funny enough, the outer suburban fares of €2, €3 and €4 have been exacerbated by the five-cent addition.)

Perhaps…but New Jersey is starting to get worse, and even so is Pennsylvania where I now dwell…
