   Despite the fact that cyclists in many cases are given a lane, a bicycle must still be treated as a vehicle with all the rights to use the road as any motorized vehicle.

   Many times the bicycle lanes are obstructed and buses and many drivers still pass cyclists without giving the cyclist adequate space to maneuver.

   I was recently passed on the Ranelagh road by an 11 bus which did not give me adequate clearance, the bus was less than four feet away which prevented me from swerving to miss a vehicle obstructing the cycle path.

   1. Vehicles overtaking cyclists should be more careful, if the bus passes too close to the driver this is very upsetting and could cause the cyclist to lose control of their vehicle.
   (Often not enough space is provided for a cyclist to fall safely from their vehicle in the event of hitting a dodgy part of road thanks to the inadequate surfacing skills of the road contractors).

   2. Vehicles obstructing bicycle lanes should be clamped or towed immediately due to the danger they present to human health and safety.

   3. Until vehicles obstructing cycle paths are removed, I will consider it my right to use the entire road for my own safety.

   Just scratch the side of the car, you wont see them parking in a cycle lane again!

   Cyclist's should not be treated as another vehicle as they do not have 2 do a driving test, most of them dont know the rules of the road, or even what a red light is, they take vehicles on the inside as the vehicle is turnig left and if they collide its classed as the drivers fault, even though it was the cyclists fault, i think cyclists are the scum of the earth (apart from a very few of them) and they should be made do some sort of test b4 they are allowed out on the road.

   You points are ridiculous:

   1. Many drivers have not done a driving test (over a quater of all drivers on the road haven't got a full license). They are still treated as vehicles, so it is only right that bikes should be treated fairly, after all, they are accorded equality in the very Rules of the Road you seem to know so little about.

   2. "Most of them don't know the rules of the road" according to the rules of the road, if a driver drives into a bike, IT IS the drivers fault. Drivers are supposed to check their mirror before turning. If they turn and hit a bike it's their fault.

   Your opinions on cyclists lack any evidence to back them up. Where are your figures? You refer to cyclists as the scum of the earth, and ask that they do a test before going onto the road. Do you want all car drivers to have done a test before ever going onto the road? Should we scrap provisional licenses?

   If you are going to post here again, perhaps you should try to come up with some intelligent solutions to our current transport crisis and avoid trying to start some kind of flame war.

   Yes i do think that provisional licences should be got rid of, i dont think drivers should be allowed on the road without having done a test, and b4 u start on about how are they meant 2 learn 2 do the test, they should only be allowed to drive with an instructor until they have passed or maybe keep the law that they have 2 have a fully licenced driver with them all times (and enforce the law, unlike now), that way we wouldnt have so many learner drivers who cant drive. Cyclists are still the scum of the earth in MY OPINION and iwhen it comes 2 giving them space i do, but, as i said b4, they should have 2 do a test aswell.

   Well, New Jersey doesn't have near as many bicyclists...but as far as drivers, all are required to first pass a written test, then do a road test, before a licence is issued, and may not drive until then. (The only exception is with teenagers of the age of 16, who may be issued a learner's permit, but must have a licenced driver with them at all times and cannot drive between dusk and dawn.) Under New Jersey law, bicycles are considered road vehicles and, when operated on the road, they are subject to all the same laws as a motor vehicle (i.e. they must not operate a bicycle against the flow of traffic, they must observe and obey all traffic signals, they must have lights when riding at night, they must signal correctly and in a timely fashion when making turns, etc.). Bicycle riders in NJ don't have to be tested, mainly because they are so sparse...I don't know how it is in China, where they have the greatest density of bicycle riders in the world (or at least from what I've seen on TV), but if Dublin has quite a high concentration of bicycle riders, then the department of vehicles should perhaps look into requirements for testing persons who ride bikes frequently, whether for business or pleasure.
