bus times
(5 posts)-
Why do DB persist in the rediculous practice of advertising services outside the normal '5 minute' scenario? If a bus is due at 8.18 or 9.16 the driver and passenger can argue the toss as to whose watch is right. What hap[ened to good old 5 past 10 past etc?

I don't know the 'why' but you could use the time printed on the ticket as the 'right time' and base the argument on that.Posted 4 years ago #

A very good question and way beyond the capacity of ordinary mortals to answer.
It always amazes me just how many different times I will get if I ask for an exact timecheck....
It can vary by as much as 5 minutes within a single ROOM !
Even the T.I M. reading cannot be taken as accurate as that depends on the TIM having been programmed corectly in the first place...

Good idea damien but many a time I have been ordered off a bus for complaining before I got as far as the ticket stage. Also the time is not always accurate and more times than not the destination stage printed is somewhere on the journey in the opposite direction. And to top that I was pulled up for paying the wrong fare when i Told the driver where I was going and he told me how much and I payed. It was then my word against when the inspector got on his although he backed down in the end. Apparently drivers dont know the various stages on our route so guess at fares.

I have observed that this problem with creative timetable-keeping has been a pervasive one for decades on the city bus services.
Mind you other companies around the world do it quite differently. New Jersey Transits bus services have their timetables structured so that a definite departure time at a specific bus stop is listed; if the bus driver leaves the stop early, he/she is subject to severe penalisation. If the bus arrives early at a stop, the driver will wait until the proper departure time arrives and then leave. It does at least foster a sense of confidence in the reliability of the bus services, and keeps many travellers out of the carsPosted 4 years ago #
