Toll road pay for public transport
(2 posts)-
I wonder would using income from toll roads to provide free public transport be enough to encourage people who wouldn't otherwise use public transport to leave their cars at home?
Having a fee system for entering the city, like London, could be a good source of income.
Getting income from the Westlink and Eastlink bridges would be brilliant - I really hope Mr Brennan doesn't renegotiate the NTR contracts if they get to build the Red Cow cloverleaf interchange.
A downside to this is that the current public transport system can't cope with the existing passenger numbers.Posted 4 years ago # -
The way they have it in New York City is that the Metropolitian Transportation Authority (MTA) has their own bridges and tunnels division that collects tolls on certain bridges and tunnels connecting the five boroughs (including the Verrazano Narrows Bridge and the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to name just two). The revenue from these tolls funds the subways and buses under the MTAs operation, plus the Long Island Railroad and Metro-North Railroad. (And of course, lorries pay more, what with the cost going up per axle on the vehicle.)
Certainly, Dublin is behind the times on instituting such a system; certainly, the whole country is too. The governments beloved motorways could be funded in such a manner, i.e. be self-sufficient while also encouraging use of the public transport.

This would be the perfect opportunity for more private bus operators to pitch in, correct ?Posted 4 years ago #
