Freeflow 2003 is upon us and already we gaze upon the face of Agememnon and weep at his all encompassing knowledge.
I give thanks daily for my unrelenting stupidity and I thank my deity for the presence of such Greatness as is contained within Dublin City Council`s offices.
The salient points of FF03 are a Website and some "Imaginative" Traffic management alterations...to wit: The intrduction of Free on-street Parking in the city centre zone after 5 pm each wek day and Allday Sunday.....Fair enuf...That will keep the place moving alright....BUT the Piece de Resistance is the SUSPENSION of the Pearse St/College Green "Bus Gate" in order to once again allow through traffic to pass the elegant facade of Pearse St Garda Barracks.
This SUSPENSION of Bus-Priority is really cutting edge and avant-garde in its nature as it follows on from a long and very thourough piece of civil engineering which saw the Kerbing at the Pearse St/Tara St Junction re-aligned as well as the Carriageway reduced to a single BusLane.
The net effect of this was to make it physically difficult, nay impossible for CARS to SAFELY progress through towards College Green.
Now At the stroke of a quill somebody on the 5th floor of Civic Offices decrees that the entire process was only a bit of a wheeze......
The threat of a Firing Squad would be too simple for them....!

Have DCC lost the plot completely? What about measures to reduce the number of cars in the city over the christmas period?

How does encouraging more cars into the city by granting extra or free parking, and allowing the same motorists to use priority bus space (bus lanes, the busgate etc...) result in a free flow of persons within the city?

Shouldn't the passengers of the bus take priority over a vehicle generally used to transport one person?

And while we're on the subject, does this mean that cars will be permitted to use the buslane on Pearse Street? If so, for what distance? Since there are many (unlawfully?) parked cars outside Tí na Gardaí motorists will have no choice but to use the buslane for a considerable distance, driving through random sized bus-bays as they go.

Also today I have heard that, contrary to what DCC and the RPA have been saying until now, most of the LUAS works in the city will be suspended over the christmas period, due to fears of city traders withholding their rates. One wonders if these same traders will agree to increased rates when trams commence depositing customers right outside their doors. I don't think I'll be holding my breath for that.

    That ain’t all they’ve lost.

Anyone have a link to road accident statistics for within Dublin City? and could someone show it to the DCC lunatics ASAP. I’m surprised that they haven’t overtly said “Let them eat cake” yet when referring to bus passengers.

There seems to be more law and order where I’m living right now. Perhaps I oughta come back home to take advantage of the anarchy that’s going on right now?

Aw Al and Alek, have you not copped on yet that the DCC has nothing to do with planning (FOR THE FUTURE) nor that it would display any common sense.

In the incredible tour of Dublin that the 39 bus undertakes, if you sit on either the top or lower deck of the bus, you will see, as the bus waits patiently in the queue of traffic on St Michael's Hill (from Christchurch Cathedral to the Quays) a beautifull yellow box at the fancy entrance and exit to the CAR PARK of the Dublin City Council "Civic" Office Headquarters.

This yellow box is there to make sure that motorists leave the entrance and exit clear for the City "FATHERS and MOTHERS" to bring their cars to and from work. It's also interisting to note that our tax money was used to provide ample car parking for these people, some of whom may also be "PLANNERS", whatever they are.

And then you wonder at what has happened for Operation Free Flow this year. At least there are jobs for the Gardai to stand and watch the traffic jams in the morning.

    Free Flow my eye.

I just thought, as the last message was being posted, that the Gardai working in Pearse St must have breached the bus lane regulations when they drive their private cars to the parking spaces that they have thoughtfully provided for themselves on three quarters of the road space in front of the Station.

No other business in the area has a similar facility.

Sorry RS,But the reply which you will recieve is "Official Business" followed by an enquiry as to whether you have been drinking....
Just as the role of DCC in planing is questioned in a previous post so to must the role of An Garda Siochana.
It is now quite clear hat the ethos of the force centres around its members being trained to be responsive rather than pro-active.
From my observation only a tiny percentage of the 146 "Extra" members have any real interest in actually attempting to manage a junction or crossing.
There are many situations now developing on a daily basis which would benefit greatly from direct and firm pre-emptive action by a Garda.
However the Templemore Training appears to have stifled any desire or ability to perform in such manner.
The ability of these "New" gardai to stand and watch developing chaos is truly astounding not to mention depressing.

Try informing the said Garda about his/her inaction and they'll soon spring to life, asking for your staff number and telling you who's boss.
