RTE Poll concerning viability of public transportation

RTÉ’s new poll on their home page asks the question, “Is public transport is a realistic alternative for commuters?” (Yes, sadly, RTÉ proof-readers are not very good.)

Only about three posts are on the comments page (which changes as the polls change, but there are archives); you would have to vote to add your own comments, but right now, the poll shows a majority believing that public transport is not a viable alternative, presumedly to driving, riding the bike or using the shoe-leather express.

Yes, I know it is a poll by RTÉ, but let ’em know what your opinion is nonetheless…

  2. I voted and left a comment, they'll probably chainsaw their way through it before it sees the light of day on their site though.

Anyhow, proof-reading aside, public transport is the *only* viable way of getting around, it has to be, we can't have our cake and eat it.

There are 1,018,500 people living in Dublin and if Charlie McCreevey, Seamus "Golden Gate" Brennan, and the (sans teflon) Taoiseach got their way , every sinner in town would be driving to work.

I am sick and tired of this government trying to encourage more cars on the roads (lower insurance cost, no increase in petrol prices at the last budget, road building everywhere etc...). We don't need motorways, we *need* trains, we don't need trams, we *need* buslanes/QBCs.

A tin of paint and a brush, that's all it takes. I'll buy the paint. Feck it, I'll buy the brushes too. We need "real" buslanes on both the north and south quays, and "real" QBCs in and out of the city to key areas. Not PR style fake-QBCs. The City Council need to pull the finger out, remove cars parked in buslanes the moment they are reported, they need to reward motorists caught driving in buslanes with heavy fines. In short they need to support public transport in the city by real, solid, action.

We need to establish buses as having the defacto right of way on Dublin's streets, and let the private motorists be damned.

I know that won't be popular with some, but to be honest driving a car into work in Dublin city centre is madness, if everyone took the bus the infrastructre would soon rise to the challenge, after all it would have to. Every extra car on the road is another excuse for the government to ditch the "public" from "public transport". We are hitting critical times people.

Well I'm glad I got that off my chest, just like old times on BUSRAGE! And yes, you've guessed it, I was stuck in traffic today on a very slow 41C and, yes, I was late for work. The Autumn of discontent continues...
