Route 50 to Carriglea, very short-lived

Always wondered what happened to that extension. Changeable as a child’s…

Well, DB rapidly decided that the service of routes 49 and 49A was sufficient for the Carriglea area and quite rapidly cut the 50 (former 50A) back to Tallaght Square. That put a damper in the plans of people from the Carriglea area that were just probably discovering the marvels of direct service to Walkinstown, Crumlin, Dolphin’s Barn and areas like that…!! Amazing how DB cuts into travel options as soon as the motorcar has a surge in popularity.

The actual reality of route 50 being extended to Carriglea has its origins in what was then known as Dublin Bus's sector revisions and the whole Tallaght,Crumlin,Walkinstown area was known then as Sector 7.

Unfortunately, the Sector 7 network revision while in theory and in print looked like an excellent transport alternative, in reality proved to be a complete practical and logistical nightmare from day 1 of instigation.

Route extensions, increases in frequencies and such like seemed like the way forward and indeed that should have been so but alas, the (female)chief scheduling officer of the time managed to overlook the need for achievable bus journey times.

It was soon obvious from the implementation of the Sector 7 revision that drivers were unable to adhere to the unrealistic schedules and bit by bit the whole network was torn to shreds as schedule after schedule had to be re written.

This was also at a time when the huge resources of new and extra buses did not exist and before long it was apparent that the reality of Sector 7 quite simply had to be a much reduced service network using the existing vehicles.

I could go into a lot more detail but think that the above should give another viewpoint on a debate that is never so one sided as it may initially appear.

It is perhaps germane to note that the personage referred in DingDing`s post has since moved on to the somewhat more receptive pastures of the DTO wherein great ideas continue to be nurtured...........

You can of course catch the 49 or 75 to the square and transfer to 50, 56a, 77, 77a. Better chance of 4 routes than 1.

Thanks for telling us old news there, Philo. The 49 and 75 ran at the same time the 50 ran into Carriglea, in case you did not know that. Also, transfers are basically still not free under DB, so having the 50 available to get you to Greenhills, Walkinstown, Crumlin, Drimnagh, Dolphin’s Barn, The Coombe and all them lovely places would still have been a very large advantage.

Every suburb would like a link to another or the reinstatement of a previous one but it is not to be. If I want to go to Carriglea I have to do it on 2 buses which is what this city is used to. The main reason the 50 was re-routed was because of horrendous traffic on Old Bawn Road which was adding 40 minutes to the journey either way. This was partly aleviated by the opening of the new link road through Alyesbury to the square but the route was never re-instated and operated by a limited 49B and now in full by the new improved 49 timetable with super low floor buses. Theres another piece of old news for ya.
