Roughly translated, he wants to know the history of bus service in the Corduff area from the time that Corduff was completed. I myself have a few blanks in my memory on that score, so help is welcome…

The first route to serve Corduff, terminating there, was the 38C. In retrospect, I have no idea why CIE Dublin District chose 38C for the route number, since the 38 was an untimetabled rush-hour service to/from Ashtown Cross and the 38A was the more frequent service, originally terminating at Coolmine Cross but later extended to Sheepmoor. A few years after the 38C came around, the 38A was cancelled, replaced mostly with increased service on the 39.

In the late 1980s or so, the 38A was resurrected as an extension of the 38C which went to Ladyswell. Eventually, the 38C disappeared into the 38A service.

During the revamping of bus routes in the early 1990s, even the 38A was swept aside to make way for the revised 38, which operated on O’Connell Street instead of Church Street and operated bi-directionally on Berkeley Street and Berkeley Road instead of in one direction. The 38 also claimed to serve Tyrrellstown in the timetable, but we all know better. For a while, the 38 operated peacefully with no alpha suffixes…that is, until the City Imp craze came to town, which resulted in the revising of all the route 22 series including alpha suffixes, resulting in the 38 being re-routed off its previous direct course on Navan Road and onto Auburn Avenue and Castleknock Road—the 38A was resurrected as an infrequent echo of the previous direct service via Navan Road. Somewhere later in the picture, the 38B and 38C got resurrected, of course, the 38C as the infrequent bus to Tyrrellstown…and who knows what changes are next down the road…?
