Bus Stop Re-shuffle at Parnell Square West (involves 46A)

    More details here.

One of the more significant changes is that of the 46A/B/C/D/E and the “sister route” 58C, whose termini will be permanently moved away from Mountjoy Square to Parnell Square West. (Interesting; you will be starting your journey facing northbound.)

Dublin Bus has stated that the re-organising of these bus stops is due to “traffic congestion”, although what manner is not specified. (Well, if you narrow O’Connell Street down to two lanes each direction as well as narrow many other streets in the city centre, the congestion won’t improve, of course…)

  2. Traffic congestion?! That is, of course, nonsense.

The real reason for the move is the fact that drivers and prospective passengers have been attacked while waiting at Mountjoy Sq. Even before the move it was not uncommon for the 46A to hang around Parnell Sq. before heading up to Mountjoy Sq. to pick up passengers.

It's interesting that Dublin Bus blame congestion and do not mention the other issue.

Any drivers care to shed some light on this?

No more light than already beaming down on this topic.
The reality is that Mountjoy Square is a dangerous and neglected area FULL STOP.
The high profile attacks which resulted in drivers refusing to utilise this place were only the tip of an iceberg.
The "Square" itself merely presented every local disadvantaged and bored adolescent with so many avenues of escape that it acted as a catalyst for interference with vehicles and all that comes with it.
Sadly in the absence of any regulatory authority with an interest in Public Transport infrastructure there is little Bus Atha Cliath can now do.
My own suggestion to extend the 46A to the precincts of Drumcondra Railway station suffered the usual fate (A bout of prolonged headscratching and much hard thinking to come up with reasons NOT to consider any suggestion coming from a hewer of wood and drawer of water)
I reiterate that there are a couple of possible scenarios which could be investigated.
1.Thru MJ Sq along Jones Rd.Terminate UNDER railway bridge and return to city EITHER via Belvedere Place/MJ Sq/Denmark St or via Dorset St/Nth Fred St.

2.Thru Parnell Sq as per 3 and 11 rte,Turn Left AT Drumcondra Stn Terminate there, then return via Whitworth Rd.
Either way this would allow a degree of integration with the Maynooth Arrow service and the main southside Bus Artery.
Anything is preferable to the present and even the NEW setup which is doing little to promote the route as a flagship.
Ah well.....lets wait till First or Stagecoach or most likely Metroline get their hands on it....!

  4. Some good ideas for the 46A there Alek, some integration with the rail route at Drumcondra would be nice.

Regarding your last comment about Metroline and Stagecoach, have you an inkling as to which routes are the much talked about first 25% to be privatised?

It would be quite cruel if the 46A was among them, but I would put nothing past this minister.

Anybody listening to the recent Newstalk 106 late night live discussion which covered the no-fares protest would have heard some VERY sensible and valid points made by Cora Collins.
In her capacity as spokesperson for a number of well known Indigenous Independents Cora expressed some misgivings about the scale and direction of Oul Mr B`s "Plan".
Any eejit (other than a polititian) can appreciate that none of the privates presently have the capability or indeed the expertise to suddenly take on some 300 extra vehicles with commensurate staff and servicing requirements.
Indeed it is a moot point as to how many of "Our Own" companies actually WANT to become involved in the often thankless task of Mass Bus Transit operations....It is a world apart from private hire/contract work.
That leaves us with the ever present Multi-National presence.
Already we have the Delgro/Comfort corporation controlling a significant wedge in the shape of Aer Dart,Galway City-Link and rumour has it a couple of other "Smalls" who have been accquired in recent days.
The end result WILL be the creation of a private Mon/Duopoly which will consign the Irish Independent sector to the history books.
Looking at the UK (YAWwwwwwn) we see a continuing contraction of the Bus as a SERVICE and its replacement with "Busy Corridor" routes which operate as an accountants joy during the 0700 to 1900 period and after that its back to you in the studio Seamus....
All over the UK (YAWnnnnn) it is the cash strapped Local Councils who are having to attempt to fund Socially Necessary bus services and at lowest cost too......which is why the Bristol VRT/Leyland Atlantean is still to be found throbbing under the control of a driver wrapped up in wolly hat and muffler a la the Dickensian mailcoach driver.
The deals have been done, and possibly the best advice is to follow the adage of the Flood Tribunal......."Follow the Paper Trail".........Personally speaking,I would be following the extent of share dealing in the likes of the Delgro/Comfort Corp and paying specific attention to share transactions involving Nominees from outside the Pacific Rim where Delgro?Comfort`s main shareholder base resides........Cynicism ??....You better believe it !

Who are you trying to tell to do that, Myles? We don’t work for DB’s Route Planning department…at least I think that nobody that posts on here works for them…
