Why the AW class?

I am still wondering just how come these articulated buses were even ordered by DB. Fine, they have Volvo components, but what was the specific need for them? DB still uses double-deck buses, which have the same capacity. These buses aren’t even used under low-clearance bridges, where they would indeed have an advantage (how about using them to increase the frequency of the current route 127, for example, by extending it to Malahide via The Hole In The Wall Road, Drimnagh Road and Seamount, cancelling the current route 42 service to Seamount? oh sorry, that would make too much sense, as well as it being so troublesome to run the route out of Broadstone instead of Clontarf, silly me). My poor head…how is it ever going to get wrapped around all these changes in the dublin bus system…

The AW class can hold around 147 passengers.
I think the average Double Deck is 97...
However i agree these vehicles are not serving their purpose on the 10 where they take up too much road space.

Where can the AW-class hold 147 passengers, on the roof? I hope everyone realises what it means for an AW-class articulated bus to hold that many human beings. I know of one class of NJ Transit Volvo-built articulated buses that go back almost twenty years (good run for them) whose seating capacity is 68, and that is with one front and two rear doors. Let’s assume 68 seats on the AW-class (although it looks like it has far less, from the interior photos I have seen); that would mean that you would have 79 people standing. How can you squeeze that many people into that bus without them coming out the windows? I would estimate a maximum of 40 standees, and that is with people sitting on the front wheel-wells.

With your double-deck buses, even 25 people standing (i.e. 97 minus 72) is stretching it. If that is how DB thinks of maximising revenue, by cattle-car compression, it truly is no wonder that passengers regard the motorcar as a better option or the only option.

The AW's offical capacity is 145 people(143 when there's a wheelchair user on board)52 seated and 93 standing. The AV's capacity is 91(71 seated) and an RV's is 87(74 seated). The AW's capacity is arrived at based on people standing the full length of the bus, which us drivers know never happens because passengers for some reason refuse to stand down the back of buses so I'd agree they're being wasted.

    Why ??
Thats easy peasy, because some bloody desk jockey took a holiday someplace in Europe and spotted these kind of exotic fruits,
returns to the oul sod and thinks ......what a splendid idea..lifts the phone to BAC and bingo !!!!
Nothing wrong with Artics per se,BUT they can only be operated in OUR city environment with high infrastructural support.
Longer Bus bays with far longer "Glide Slope" to allow for approach and departure.Dedicated priority at "Pinch Point" turns and junctions, and not least the complete elimination of ALL cash transactions with the driver.
Presently these fine machines are simply working hard against the entire principle of the Bus as an efficient public transport tool.
The real route for AW operation is the Airlink 747/748...where presently my management persists with double deck operation refusing to accept that intending Airport bound customers do NOT want to be seperated from their luggage downstairs in order to sit upstairs.
Instead they flock in droves to Mr Aircoach`s fine vehicles where the precious portmanteau are locked in the boot and the owners sit in comfort above...Its that simple.......So lets get a petition going for a BendyLink to the Airport and DoubleDoor the 10`s.
    Problem solved....NEXT....!!!!!!
