: Democracy lives! Dublin Bus have been obliged to revise the new fares downwards from Monday 9 December 2002 after attempting to raise them by far more than the 9% for which they were given permission. See how this change came about? The angry punters (us) kicked up stink- Eoin Ryan summoned DB to appear before the Joint Committee on Transport which he currently chairs. DB appeared, discussions took place, and DB changed their fares. All this took place within a week to ten days. I find this encouraging- the often maligned politicians took responsibility and brought about change. Next up before the Transport Committee are Bus Eireann. Now what we need is a public transport user's council, with a statutory base, and some resources. The power of the council will be required to represent users whether DB is the main player or there are lots of competing private companies. We will also still have the Joint Committee on Transport. Yours Charlie Delap. P.S. Delighted to hear news of impending improvements to Busrage site- I can't imagine life without Busrage.

[posted by: anissa janahi]

Steady on Chas...!
Democracy had sod all to do with any of the developments just gone.
Not A Sausage.
If you think Eoin Ryan or Seamus agus a cheann mor had Seosamh o Publaic uppermost in their minds on this issue then Think again.
This sordid little vignette had its roots back in the Euro Diktat from Mary o Rourkes office to the CIE group after it had proposed a rebalancing of its fare structure to encompass the Euro Ripoff,,OOoops...sorry changeover !
Mindful of the fact that Government policy was to merely threaten to "Name and Shame" anyone found to be profiteering from Euro Day using the unfortunate Carmel Fagan,Director of Consumer Affairs,as the namer.
So having regard to the terror which Carmel was able to instil into corporate Ireland the CIE group were the ONLY organization on the Planet to REDUCE its cash fares.
So this time the accountant was being creative when he/she used the OLD pre.Euro fares as a base from which to calculate the increase...plus using an OVERALL revenue figure rather than a fare by fare figure to calculate the new fares.
The INITIAL new structure announced briefly last Saturday featured the €1 "Flat(ish) Fare concept being introduced for the first time and this alone would have been of incredible benefit to the customer in Speeding up the Flow of people thus giving a REAL benefit in Time terms to those who DO make the effort to buy pre-paid tickets or who DO bother to have their money ready when the Bus finally arrives after 30,40,50, minutes etc....
So WHY was the introduction of this flat-fare concept so viciously put-down ??
This is the real mystery or is it.....
It has long been my belief that there is a coterie of highly placed individuals who are hell-bent on Thwarting ANY real improvement to Bus Atha Cliath services due to their ongoing involvement in High profile new high-tech,high-spend projects such as LUAS,METRO,The Irish Mission to Mars etc etc...
It has been proven many times over, since the 1979 Papal Visit and continuing through two decades of Slane Castle Concerts and a Cratefull of other Mass Moving events that The Bus service can cope with all of the demands imposed on it IF it is given meaningful priority and roadspace and the co-operation of the entire spectrum of regulatory and enforcement agencies.
These events proved beyond doubt the Flexibility,Cost Effectiveness, and Efficiency of Bus Transport in our environment.
Acceptance of this fact scares the high-placed anti bus group s**tless,as they see the comonsense Bus solution pulling the rug from beneath their pet projects along with all the attendant perks such as foreign fact finding tours and all that go with that milleu.
This is why the compliant media, with the exception of the Independent Groups Business Editor Brendan Keenan have dutifully refrained from asking too many dificult questions about how our Public Transport infrastructure is being hi-jacked by technophobes.
The existance of this small but powerful group actively prevents any real improvement in Dublin Bus service levels in terms of Quantity OR Quality and thus the long suffering Bus User must continue to act as Career Fodder for the fast ascending young turks.
So if its Democracy you are looking for Charlie, then go to Colombia or somewhere because there aint much of it around Dail Eireann.
PS.
And while I am at it...How about the Chairman of CIE doing the honourable thing and resigning as a token of atonement for failing to back his subsidiary companies boards and by inference their employees ???
: Democracy lives! Dublin Bus have been obliged to revise the new fares downwards from Monday 9 December 2002 after attempting to raise them by far more than the 9% for which they were given permission. Delighted to hear news of impending improvements to Busrage site- I can't imagine life without Busrage.

Outer Suburban 1 is still €2 and Outer Suburban 2 is still a whopping €3. How are we going to afford to go to Rush Strand in the summer...??

http://www.dublinbus.ie/news_centre/timetable_and_route_news.asp?action=view&news_id=150
