Forewarning: still heavy user of 56a who's run out of straw.

Someone there^ said they were thinking of putting the 56a as a semi regular service. That'd be progress from where it is now. Freezing cold wind, stuck in the Ballymount Industrial Estate, I was waiting 57 mins for a 56a. Add to that the time I wasn't waiting and you see my annoyance. For people in Crumlin or Tallaght who can get any bus, it may not seem as bad, but when the 56a is your only option, I can guarantee that I will not greet a bus with a smile in December after an hour wait.

Here's the thing though: this was from eight to nine IN THE MORNING - rush hour! A bus came with kids for Drimnagh college who were now late and anyone needing to get into town for say 9 were late as well. 99D504 was the reg, a bus not usually on the 56a - usually an AV or RA and only one bus was seen going in the opposite direction. Shambolic, even for the restricted timetable that there is.

Finally the timetable as it is, is caused not merely by the LUAS as suggested above. It is caused by years and years of poor service of the 56a. Once any other option was given to people they jumped ship to the LUAS understandably. Provide a better 56a in the past and they would never have left. That still leaves the poor, unfortunate and long since forgotten souls who have to get the lesser-spotted 56a today though.

I pity us.
RIP 56a.
[posted by: dfx]

People like new should be banned from using dublin bus,

cry and cry and moan but if you were stuck with no car, only enough for the bus in the likes of blessington or dunboyne somewhere far out, with only the bus, and the odd taxi, theyd be the first to smile and be glad of the sight of the bus,and hop on it straight away. or even when its raining and its cold and they use the bus , they dont realise that theyre hypocrites. If ya dont like the bus, feckin walk! and they only complain online where they arent face to face, why dont you go into 59 o connell sreet to complain? nah youd rather just moan on this in the comfort of your own home.. dublin bus provide a good service and 99 percent of the buses are kept to high standards, so they should be applauded for their day to day work and having to put up with the likes of New.
[posted by: gary]

The upper fortunestown/fettercairn section of 56A is not served by luas. Perhaps this should be extended to Ellensborough instead of 54A. Also areas served by 77/77A are not served by luas and have suffered cuts. Where are the vehicles that operated to Tallaght and have been cut now deployed to?
[posted by: a2000]

Too true A2k..However the 56A remains only thanks to the eforts of local polititans like Brian Hayes who lives in Kingswood.
Whether we like it or not the 56A is a route which has been decimated by LUAS.
The loadings have simply collapsed.
The original Dublin Bus proposal involved truncating the route into a sortofa kindofan extended Local Link with a semi-regular service runnin as far as the Childrens Hospital.
Part of the problem with the route AFAICS is the inability of the company to realign or extend the route to serve the likes of City West,Saggart or even the expanding environs of Blessington.
Any hint of such a move would immediately invite the sanction of the Dept of Inertia (Transport).
This process is usually begun by a private operator objecting (or being invited to) and the Dept immediately imposing a Status Quo on the situation.
I am somewhat disappointed to see "New" drop his/her crusade in mid charge as I feel his points deserve consideration,as much for their evidence of Service Perception as a methodology to be considered in the planning process.
As he correctly observes, the worth of my job depends entirely on Dublin Buses ability to retain custom from his/her type of commuter.
"New"s PERCEPTION of events on Monday morning present us with a very interesting example of what Operators could or should be doing to advise customers of serious disruptions to services.
I know for example that both Mortons and Dualway operations suffered considerable disruption from the same incident and this disruption recognized NO differerence between private or public operator OR commuter.
As for the P 45`s.well the Jury remains out on that issue.
Recent developments on how the EU Commission views Public Subvention of Passenger Transport services are very interesting indeed and appear to indicate what could be termed a U turn.
This essentially comes in the face of a rather scary increase in the Total Cost of Public Transport provision which tended to be hidden by a commensurate reduction in the ACTUAL service levels Europe Wide.
A very revealing Press Release from Junior Minister Pat (The Cope) Gallagher last week contained a little nugget in the penultimate paragraph.
I would recommend any interested parties, such as "New" to visit The Copes site and search out the Press Release...It`s the one which begins with the EU wide Credit Card Driving Licence....Happy Reading.....
PS I think we should be trying to ensure the "New"s of the world retain the sense of outrage which stimulates good discussion ..??

New, you initially stated you were handed a leaflet at Eden Quay and a few posts later you're complaining how noboddy approached you at Eden Quay... make up your mind!
As already mentioned, there has been a lot of interaction with Tallaght residents about bus services, if you didn't hear the ads on radio, read the press or see the displays in The Square then that is hardly Dublin Bus' fault.

I find it hilarious how you put down yesterdays traffic congestion to the terminus change, again, a little more research would have told you that not only your bus, but a great amount of buses were stuck in traffic because of an accident on the quays, infact one might argue if your bus was still terminating at Eden Quay, the delay would have been even longer!
I walk the short distance from O'Connell Bridge to College Street every day, it involves crossing 3 streets, all of which have traffic lights and are pedestrian friendly, I would love to know it takes you 10 minutes? I say 4 minutes max!
I have often walked quicker than buses from those two locations.
[posted by: P]

Its at least good to see that "New" is open minded enough to accept that the "Privates" are clean, better run and staffed than SOME of the public services.
Oddly enough as a resident of Tallaght I was fairly bombarded with Bumph and On-Bus notices as well as Radio guff about public consultations on the terminus move.
However whether "New" likes it or not change will happen and any developmental process will result in out-of-joint noses, not to mention disgruntlement.
Human beans simply don`t like change full stop....
The Tallaght changes are as pointed out elsewhere part of a bigger picture and as such will require far more time than two days to gain any meaningful idea of their impact on travel patterns.
On balance the potential benefits which can be derived from the Grand Canal Dock link do I feel outweigh the "Serving the Northside" arguement, but again, that`s a developmental thing and will take time to impact.
The other factor which "New" ignores (or chooses to ) is the increasing problem of lack of integration or even minimal co-operation between the various strands of Civic Management and the major service provider,or for that matter the assorted private companies who are attempting to operate with virtually no support from a City Council which appears to believe that people CAN fly.
Dublin Bus is well aware of the value of Prime-Site well established Termini and U can take it that the decision to finally acceed to the City Councils increasingly strident "Requests" was not taken lightly.
Sadly for "New" the decisions which result in his/her 25 min defecit were taken way way back in the early 70`s when the greatest living ex-Taoiseach,CJ Haughey INSTRUCTED the board of CIE to desist from any further development of a City Centre Bus Terminal which had it materialized would have allowed the City to develop in a vastly different fashion than it did.
The development of the Tallaght services may yet be greatly enhanced by the Eastern extension if the very obvious choke points such as Townsend St are attended to by the City Council and/or the Gardai.
Its unlikely that "New" will get much change from most posters on Busrage but he/she might find a felllow traveller in one Paul Tully who can be contacted at info@xstream-pictures.com
where it appears the disgruntled punter may be offered a speaking role in a docu-drama focusing on the awfulness of life as a commuter...worth a try I reckon...15 secs of fame etc etc ....??
As stated already no one ever approached at Eden Quay re these events which would be an obvious point to start.
Took me an extra 25 minutes to get into work this morning. This points to an obvious down grading of service, strangely enough no people were on the bus when it came to Trinity, proving that there is no need for this extra service.

Also a lot of people where calling into work on the bus to say they'd be late. Well done Dublin Bus !

Extra time taken to get from old bus stop to new is over 10 minutes (lots of busy roads to cross at rush hour), is 2 mintues ONLY if you fly across water and roof tops - but if I could do that wouldn't have to bother with a bus !

Al - Have often availed of private bus services in this country, which have been clean, better run and staffed than some of the public services.

Do any of you work for Dublin Bus per chance ?
[posted by: new]

New, you will now have to walk a whole 2 minutes to College Street, it is hardly going to cause hardship for Tallaght. To say these routes served the "Northside" is stretching things slightly, they stopped at the wall of the liffey. This is a massive improvement for Tallght routes as it will connect the area closer to the huge development at Grand Canal Dock.
The "meetings" consisted of two weekend events, heavily advertised and took place in The Square. There are also regular community meetings between Tallaght resident groups and Dublin Bus.
Can you explain how expanding a route, holding public events and handing out information leaflets is treating customers with contempt?
This move is the first of many planned changes under the Dublin Bus network review. Along with this comes pressure from Dublin City Council to remove parked buses from City Centre termini.
Again to my above point, moving a bus stop across two streets does not greatly affect passengers. Bus stops get moved every other week in this city for many reasons.
[posted by: P]

Dublin Bus treat their users with contempt, they don t care about inconveniencing the people who pay their wages. Alas the sooner privatised the better ....
[posted by: new]

Was getting bus to Tallaght today at Eden Quay and handed leaflet stating that 50/56a/77/77A were all changing routes as from Monday. It is now not possible to get on these buses from the north side. Instead of Eden Quay buses now start at Ringsend.
How can they do this without consulting people who use the service everyday ?

[posted by: new]
