The standard fare is only issued if a person is caught trying to evade paying the fare. Two problem,s there ,one you have to have to have a checker on the bus (when was the last time anyone saw a checker checking ticket,s ?) two if a person is caught the normal excuse is " I paid but the driver did,nt give me a ticket AND for some reason the checker believes it .
[posted by: kevin]

The standard Busfare on Dublin Bus services is 30 Euros

I remember CIE Dublin District having a standard fare, too. Sure would be an enormous surplus for DB if all passengers had to pay that...!

Mary,Mary,Quite contrary etc etc...
The standard Busfare on Dublin Bus services is ¤30.
However in return for passengers stating their destination and tendering the correct amount this is reduced to the amounts which are currently in force. Adult 90c ¤1.30,¤1.50,¤1.75,¤1.85 etc.
The issue of "Change Tickets" came about during the introduction of the Autofare system after a prolonged period of violent attacks on Busdrivers in order to get at the cash takings which up until then were the responsibility of the driver until paid-in at the end of the shift.
However in a typically Irish compromise the authorities inserted a "Change Ticket" feature which allows pasengers to reclaim their change upon production of BOTH the travel ticket AND the change ticket (One is invalid without the other).
The reality of the current "Change Ticket" system is that it is causing unnecessary delays to an already slow system as tardy passengers delay or remonstrate with the driver on the basis of slow issue or a percieved unwillingness to give the passenger "Their Change".
The reality is that the "Money Changing in the Temple" routine is causing significant delay to the MAJORITY of those passengers who are responsible enough to have bought one of the extensive variety of pre-paid tickets or to those who have taken the little time to count out the correct fare BEFORE the arrival of the Bus,especially as this is Usually supposed to be after an interminable wait during which no attempt could be made to root for coins or count out the required amount.
Those co-operative passengers are at least taking some responsibility for their own commute and IMO are deserving of some more consideration from the company.
I would recommend Mary to check out the tange of pre-paid Tickets, particularly the Rambler Range and most certainly the Value Pack of Travel 90 tickets which offer Great Value when used to their full extent.
Rather than "Reminding" the driver Mary would do well to clearly state or display the amount "She" is tendering BEFORE dropping it into the Autofare Unit.
This simple tactic at least allows the driver to verify the amount and issue the "Change Ticket" virtually seamlessly with the travel ticket.
If Mary really wants to have a situation where EVERY driver carries out an individual audit on EVERY cash payers transaction then "She" had better be prepared for an even longer wait for "Her" bus than presently.
The incidence of on-bus Cash Transaction in Dublin is far too high and will eventually have to be tackled.
Transport for London for example is actively discriminating in favour of cashless transactions by requiring ALL Bus Passengers in the Central Zone to pre-purchase tickets from roadside machines OR ticket agents.
Drivers will NOT accept cash and will direct the passenger to a kerbside machine before closing the doors and driving off in order not to delay the commute of those passengers who have complied.
In addition on the few remaining Conductor Operated routes and on all other Bus routes the normal cash fare is £1.20 (¤1.74 approx) Thats per journey (Of ANY length)
From January that increases to £1.50 (¤2.10 approx).
This Hi-Cash Fare strategy is designed to encourage passengers to use the Oyster Card,a smart contactless system which allows users to put credit on their card and deduct the Journey fare which on Oyster will be SUBSTANTIALLY cheaper than the cash fare.( Present Oyster single fare is 80p)
This is proving to be a very effective tactic in driving down the use of Cash on the platform as only a true Gombeen would continue to pay 50% more per journey simply to excercise their right to delay everybody else`s commute.
Similarly in Birmingham, the home of Autofare the passenger will get NO change OR "Change Ticket" if they overpay.
They are required to have the "Exact Fare" plain and simple. The Birmingham system also has the added tweak of the Ticket Printer being located remotely from the Cash Vault which means that the boarding passenger keeps moving and takes their ticket from the machine BEHIND the drivers back.
This simple modification ensures that MOMENTUM is maintained and is in total variance to the Dublin System which allows for disgraceful dwell times as passengers queue behind those befuddled or downright anti-social enough to deliberately delay their fellow passengers.
So there ye have it "Mary" it`s up to yourself whether you think enough of the principle of efficient public transport to actually make a contribution to that efficiency or whether at the end of it all U prefer to try and "Catch Out" the driver trying to diddle U out of ur 10c.
BTW Have no fears of drivers cashing the "Change Tickets" in at lunch time.
The CT would not be valid without the sequentially numbered Travel Ticket and I cant imagine many drivers crawling around on the floor trying to retrieve discarded TT`s to match up with a CT.
Essentially Mary it`s about Gettin a Life for oneself and taking responsibility for ones own actions in relation to others.
The Europeans were always well ahead of us on this score and their public transport has always operated on the "Greater Good" principle in stark contrast to the Irish model of the Individual having primacy irrespective of how much disruption is caused to others.
Remember "Mary" society has moved on apace from the days when a cheery conductor could swagger around the bus dispensing wit and repartee to all and sundry whilst changing £20 notes for little ol dears.....the only place you`ll see that carry on now is if you watch endless reruns of "A Man of no Importance"......
Ding Ding...!!!!

i recently started to use public transport after 7years of driving, one thing i have found when i pay my fair and and give over the amount, i always need to remind the bus driver he owes me a refund, i often wonder are they trying to keep the refunds and cash them in at lunch time!!!
