Cars may seem to be the panacæa right now compared to public transportation, but wait a few more years while the traffic situation gets worse and worse, and more and more lorries clog up the roads, and more and more accidents occur...and, following that, the prices of car insurance climb higher and higher...Ireland will become known as the New Jersey of the old world...
Out of any public transportation project, the Metro deserves the most support. IMO, it should be a DART service, not a LUAS, in order to maximise passenger-carrying capabilities without sacrificing comfort too greatly, plus the DART's current barrier system will lend itself to more secure fare-collection and better (not perfect) security against trespassers. Also...like the current DART, it has the potential of "beating the traffic" and cutting right to the city centre. Besides, one recent bright spot regarding the Metro is that CIÉ has been ruled out as its operator...
On another note: Any complaints against Bus Éireann and their further-out commuter services to places like Kells, Mullingar, Naas, etc.? No need to limit this forum to Bus Átha Cliath, you know, the site is calle "Busrage.com"...:-)

Metros have the potential of being high-capacity rail systems...both light-rail and heavy-rail have been used in underground systems, but since heavy-rail usually uses the greater number of coupled carriages, it's usually the one with more capacity. After reading on Irish Railway News about the Airport-Shanganagh line being "upgraded to Metro status" (not ending in Cabinteely now?), I'm wondering what manner of rail vehicles are planned for use on this line. (Would an extension to the former Shanganagh Junction imply a direct rail link to the DART in Shankill again?)
