Cash is not really an issue for commuters. Time is

Speaking of cash, just recall all of that which was spent on the QBCs, to little avail it seems. Those magical corridors were supposed to make the bus more time-sensitive than the automobile, but they were underinvested in, with public monies no less (and that's your cash).

Not to mention that spending on rail transportation was indeed supposed to up the ante in terms of beating the auto as well. Instead, you get Luas, which is too little compared to what rail is capable of carrying, and even worse, there were street-bound alignments built.

And let us not get rights and privileges mixed up. Driving is a privilege, no matter how much you pay for it. And it's largely due to over-dependence on, and over-use of, the automobile that has made time-sensitivity such an issue when it comes to commuting.

Well al, insurance ect would only be a factor if I only made this one specific journey but my outgoings on the car are justified consiodering the travelling i do as well as going to the town the odd day in the month. Cash is not really an issue for commuters. Time is so it can be to your advantage to pay a little extra for that 1/3 hour more with the kids in the evening. What i spend on the car annually is less than the cost of an annual bus only ticket. If people choos eto use their car then they have the right to do so as they are paying dearly for the privilege.
[posted by: a2000]

That's the way it should be. Nothing fascist about it. Illegal parking should be raised to the level of being felonious. (Although, having the former Dublin & Bray Railway running on the street is a crime in and of itself...)

Anyway, back on topic; it is still not necessary for the railway to be closed in order to make platforms longer. Nowhere else in the world is this done. The people in Dublin ate it when the South-side closures were forced on them—and why?? If they had raised enough of a stench about it, then the DART could have stayed open on weekends. Now they have to eat it for the North-side conversion. Speaking up is what will get things done...

If it were up to me, and car parked blocking a tramway or buslane in tat fashion would be confiscated and crushed without appeal.

Call me facist if you like, but at least I'd get the trams to run on time . . .

SoS
[posted by: Steve O'Shea]

Well Sai take a look at page 18 of tonights Evenin Herald and read the story.
But lookin at the pic is probably self explanatory.
Location,Abbey Street....There sits 95 MH (Meath) 3339 full frontal to a Million euro worth of Citadis/Alstom`s very best offerings.
The poor befuddled owner had parked there overnight totally oblivious to Tram Lines,Tram Warning Signs,Overhead Tram Cables etc.
BUT the killer is in the response of the "Authorities" as typified by the stance of the Garda in the Pic..Arms comfortably folded with a bemused expression on his fizzog.
It seems that all the Kings Horses and all the Kings Men could`nt get hold of a Tow Truck until 11 AM.
So much for Rapid Response and it should also serve as a warning to those potential Luas users who might have ideas that Luas will ALWAYS get them to their destination on time....It depends on whether the Royalettes are prepared to play ball or not !!!! An Mhi Abu...!!!!

I don't drive, I don't want to, I can't afford to, and I am scared of cars, but regardless of all that, and the assumption that everyone has money for a car, which is also very ignorant, I don't understand either why this country cannot seem to change the slightest thing in its infrastructure without shutting down the entire system. How come other countries manage?

Nice, but kinda off-topic.

You forgot to factor in the cost of driver licence, car reg/insurance/inspection, and all that...

Would be a bit fairer to also use the monthly/annual "Short Hop" passes for cost comparisons as well...

Yes as it happens. I can leave my house at 9.45am, get to the north quays at 10. I seem to be the only person to read signs that show the bus lanes are not in service and am usuallly the only person in the lane between 10-12. I get to Arnotts at 10.15. 2 hours shopping, pay my e6 and am home again in 15-20 mins the same lenght of time it would take to walk to the bus terminus. The bus fare for 2 people would be e6.40 return and the journies would take 2 hours in total versus 35 mins travelling in the car at a 40c saving. Hows that?
[posted by: a2000]

I can get onto the m50 at Lucan junction, travel to coolock in 10 mins nad turn left for Malahide and be there in 20 mins. If I were to get the Dart I would have to get a bus first and would be in Malahide/Howth BEFORE the bus even came. Even if I sat in traffic for 1 hour I would still be quicker by car.
[posted by: a2000]

With all them cars, can the traffic even move on those roads? It's not like there are motorways going to either Malahide or Howth. The M50 ends far west of Malahide Road and turns into the two-lane N32. James Larkin Road and Dublin Road are still one lane in each direction—and since Howth Road going through Raheny merges back into the main Howth corridor at two ends (Clontarf and Blackbanks), that won't help things at all. Used to be that the DART was the relatively sane way to go. Now with extra buses and dead rails, how bad can bad get...?

Albert..Mon Ami...Give em a break.
Its a long time since Mama and Papa gathered their chizzlers about them and took the train out to Malahide or Howth.
The reality is they now use one of their cars.
This is largely because they want to get through the day without some little tosspot pissing on their clothes or tipping a half eaten kebab on the babys head.
Sarf Dublin managed to survive Dortless weekends pretty much unscathed and I reckon the Northsiders will rise to the challenge too !!

Read all about it...

Amazing how they got away with shutting down DART on the weekends on the south side, during their lengthening of platforms to accommodate eight-car trains. Now, it's the north side's turn, and they're doing it during the summer, when travel to Sutton, Howth, Portmarnock and Malahide is at its peak.

As I've said before here and elsewhere, no other railway shuts down operations completely in order to lengthen platforms. The way IE is going about the project, you'd swear that they were widening the alignment between Malahide and Bray from two tracks to four...!
