Well Well Well....A day in politics is indeed a long time.
In a letter to the ICTU dated today (9/1/04) our intrepid Minister for Transport states categorically that he did NOT supply ANY percrentage or time-frame figures to the reporter who ascribed them to him is the controversial article which scuppered last weeks Department/Union talks.
Now this esentially means the Minister for Transport is flatly accusing the reporter concerned of Fabricating the interview and of misrepresenting the Minister.
In essence we are being told the Reporter was Lying.....
This is serious stuff indeed and It will be VERY interesting to see if Oul Mr Brennans love affair with the Media has hit the buffers..??

Potential strike action at CIÉ has been averted for now after the group of unions opted to accept an invitation to meet the Minister for Transport, Séamus Brennan, in a bid to resolve the row over the future of the company.

However the unions stressed that their mandate for industrial action remains live.

SIPTU national industrial secretary Michael Halpenny said that given the potential seriousness of the disruption to public transport, the unions owed it to the public to explore every avenue to resolve their differences.

However NBRU general secretary Liam Tobin stressed that the move did not mean that the unions' trust in the minister had been restored.

Mr Tobin said that on the day after the meeting with the minister – a date for which has yet to be arranged - the unions will decide whether to revive their plan for industrial action.

Both SIPTU and the NBRU said that the likelihood of disruption depended on what step the minister would take to reassure them that he was serious about addressing their concerns in a constructive way.

Aer Rianta unions to consider strategy

Meanwhile, the group of unions at Aer Rianta is to meet tomorrow to consider its next move in its campaign against Mr Brennan's plans to break up the company.

Union sources said they were extremely disappointed at the outcome of this week's talks with department officials.

Wel Well.....What a difference a day makes.
Tonight we have the spectre of An Taoiseach attempting to re-establish some form of dialogue between Unions and Department.
Mr Aherne interestingly spoke of "THE CABINETS" desire to see talks continue following the progress already achieved.
This paints a picture of the diminuitive Minister For Transport sitting in a corner all huffy after the big-boys slapped his wrist.
It also indicates that the Senior Civil Service people have been expressing some unhappiness at the very public humiliation dished out to the General Secretary of the Dept of Transport by her Minister.
Bertie Ahearn is a past master at this type of intricate and delicate negotiation and he quite obviously is miffed at how such a senior Minister as Brennan managed to make a Cats Menackie of the entire process in order to satisfy a sub-editors hunger for copy.
The actuality here is that Brennan went off on yet another self-serving solo run with his breathless "25% of Bus Eireann Also" Independent article.
This was almost incredibly at odds with the Assurances given by himself AND his Departmental Negotiating Team regarding.
Now,whilst the Professional Civil Servants scrupulously abided by those assurances, their boss very publicly hung them out to dry with his largely nonsensical Independent Interview.
This is closely followed by yet another announcement re nothing as The Minister "Announces" the details of the much sought after and obligatory,Public Transport Regulator.
The details amounted to confirmation that 1.proposed contracts would be of 5 years duration.
2.The Regulator would be responsible for setting standards (!)
3.The Regulator would penalize or reward operators for compliance with his/her requirements.
4.The Regulatory Model would be based on the "Successful" Dublin Taxi Regulator model.
Fine so far...Yes..??
THis particular piece of serious minded journalism is then seriously challenged by two items.
A.The revelation that Minister Brennan "INTENDS TO INTRODUCE" leglislation to set up the Regulatory Framework "In the near Future". (Whatever That represents in political terms)
B.The piece which was also carried in the Indo detailing how Minister Brennan had been "Forced" to reconsider the Salary Level for the New "Successful" Taxi Regulator in order to attract applicants of high enough calibre (IE: Without an active criminal record) for the position.
The present "Successful" Regulator upon which Seamus has modeled the Public Transport one turns out to be a somewhat Toothless "Interim" one.

The Above catalogue of incredulity Ladies and Gentlemen represents the entirity of Regulatory or Planning thought within the Office of the Minister for Transport.
And people STILL wonder why This Gentleman is regarded with contempt..????

Commuters could be facing travel disruption after the National Bus and Railworkers Union said it will not continue talks with the Department of Transport about the future of CIÉ.

The national executive of the NBRU met for three hours today to decide the union's stance on the break-up of CIÉ. Its leadership has been mandated to take whatever industrial action is necessary to prevent the company from being broken up.

The union will not outline what form industrial action might take but it may involve a series of one-day work stoppages.

A Department of Transport spokesman said Minister Séamus Brennan had a right to articulate his policy position, and said that did not have to conflict with ongoing negotiations.

The CIÉ group of unions is due to meet on Thursday to decide its next move. The unions are due to meet Department of Transport officials next week but those talks may not now go ahead.
