I rarely open the centre doors because, on the trusty Volvo Olympian, they occasionally refuse to close, causing the bus to refuse to move off. The passengers never seem to understand that even though the engine is running, the bus has in fact, broken down. Either that, or they think I enjoy sitting there for 10 minutes, revving the engine.
Also, if passengers exit via the centre door, they don't get the opportunity to express their gratitude to their helpful driver, thus making his job eternally worthwhile.

Steve...I wont tell you that U is Wrong...But I am having difficulty holding back the crush of Economists,Civil Servants,Managers, and at the very back a small fellow claiming to be the Minister for Transport who are insistent on each and every citizen being encouraged to demonstrate their ability to count coinage AFTER they have entered the Tardis....
Non-Nationals are exempt from this rant because they usually have it all sorted before the craft docks at the stop....Just watch the Filipino`s...My Ideal Passengers...!!

Flat fare is indeed the way to go.

The following is my simple, workable, suggestion:

Any single jounrey = 1 euro

All Day Ticket = 2 euro

7 day Ticket = 5 euro

Month Ticket = 20 euro

This thus discourages anyone from paying cash for anything other than a single journey, and even that is a simple 1 euro coin.

Yes, increased subvention would be required. But . . . it is true, and a demonstrated fact, that a simple, cheap fare system, will encourage more journeys. And with much quicker boarding, delays and costs will go down.

Tell me I'm wrong!

Steve

[posted by: Steve O'Shea]

In San Francisco the rear doors would open when the passenger stepped on a pressure mat on the inside of the doorway.
This does not eliminate the possibility of boarding passengers using that doorway without paying but makes it more difficult.
Like on trains, the pressure mat was only enabled when the bus stopped.

WRT 'Cashier' I wonder why the cash machines don't count the money for the driver. If you throw a load of copper in there I bet it is impossible to count. Of course flat fares would be best ...

I reckon that the job name and description of "Bus Driver" should be changed to "Bus Not Driver" to reflect better the majority of work that they have to do. Other job names could be:
"Cashier", "Ticket Dispenser Operator", "Abuse Taker", "Listener to Gobs**tes", "Ticket Validator Overseer", "Pram Parking Attendant", to name but a few.

Any other suggestions?

A hoary old chesnut indeed, yet there are some items which have still not been addressed.
The volume of City Bus Operations now makes it Mandatory for operators to cease driver cash transactions.
The continuing policy of Dublin Bus to collect cash on board is strangling our operations.
However....Those cities which have high off bus or pre-paid transaction volumes tend to be those with a high degree of public subvention.
As it presently stands Dublin`s low level of Support means that the cash counting displays will continue to be a major cause of Bus Delays.
Other conundrums arise when refering to centre door usage.
There is really no point whatever in raising comparisons with European or US operators,it really is chalk and cheese.
In the UK however, more spiritually akin to ourselves,Double Door operation is relatively scarce outside London and a handful of other major cities.
Indeed the first item which is attended to on the thousands of ex London Double Decks coming on the second hand market is the REMOVAL of the centre exit and its associated electro-mechanical componentry and its replacement with revenue earning seating.
The issue of Multi-Door boarding is something which is different again with Articulated operation and I would agree is a simple requirement before ANY such vehicles are introduced into service.
Dublin Bus are presently doing irreprepable damage to its own corporate image and to the image of Bus Travel in general with a dogged persistance in Cash Transactions on board its Artics on the 10 route.
There is sadly no overall policy in effect which would for example allow for set-down areas in the city-centre.
It must also be recognized that the present generation of Transbus ALX 400 buses represent Bus Atha Cliaths first purchase of UK "Standard" vehicles for many years.
This being in the hope of maintaining residual value in the future......
Other cities can use buses with multiple doors and their travelling public can operate them without any bother. As I said, some of the bendy buses have 4 doors, all in use. Our bendies only have 2, and it's only in exceptional circumstances where the 2nd door is actually used.

If they can manage these arrangements in other countries then so can we.

As to fare evasion, that happens all the time, even when only one door is used. In our system the onus is placed on the driver to drive the bus as well as: taking cash, issuing tickets, checking that ticket validators are used at the entrance door and that all passengers are accounted for. When you add the time that the driver spends not driving, with the bus standing at a stop as the fares are being taken, to the time that it takes passengers to disembark and board in turn, it must amount to quite an amount of time, most of which is a waste. This is costly and not journey efficient. And still fare evasion takes place.

The best solution would be to put the inspectors on high visible presence, and increase the risk of evaders being caught. Summary justice can be served by an on the spot fine or evicting the evader from the bus straightaway, as well as maybe an appropriate forum for hearing fare evasion cases, without the need for free legal aid that can be availed of by even ex government ministers, and suitable penalties.

That might go some way to reducing journey times generally.

As to passengers being confused, people generally follow the lead of others. If one person puts their buggy in the stairwell, others do it. A few door openings will sort that one out fairly quickly.

The way they do it in most US cities is to have either an opening device operated by the passenger (this varied from a push-button on the rear door or a bar on the door containing a switch that would open the door when pushed) or by the driver when signalled (using a bell switch on the door itself).

Some bus systems elsewhere in the world have gone over to using the POP (proof-of-payment) system, where you get on the bus bearing a pre-paid and pre-validated ticket and inspectors travel throughout the system and inspect passenger tickets, and issue fine summonses to violators, thus allowing entry/exit via all doors. But POP is subject to abuse unless there is a permanent inspector presence on board the buses, and this increases costs, really…

They did try to implement exit by centre doors for a short peroid but a combination of drivers not opening the doors and confusion of passengers standing waiting for centre doors to open caused a cancellation of this practice. Most centre doors are now marked emergency exit.
[posted by: Phil]

Ain’t that an old question. Anybody happen to remember the first of the Leyland Atlanteans, that they had only one door? When the next batches arrived, bearing two doors, they still didn’t permit use of both doors, even despite the fact that the unions prevailed in preventing OPO and the conductors were retained. Even when OPO was made the standard, the centre doors still were never used. I do not believe that there was ever a logical reason for CIE to force people to exit via the front door.

So, back to the days of the first batch of Atlanteans we go, with the one door. Hey, saves on maintenance costs, and since all the passengers are forced to the front to exit anyway, why not…not to mention having extra seats and no hazard with mothers putting the prams in the un-used door vestibule…

Can anyone explain why Dublin Bus are buying and using buses with just one door on them?

And can anyone also explain why the buses that have more than one door don't use them?

In Belgium, buses can have 1, 2, 3 or even 4 doors......all in use!

Can Paddy the Irishman not manage more than one door on the bus?

Surely using more than one door will reduce journey time.
