Someone really likes that routing of the 39…it’s been messed up since the early 1980s ever since they extended the route from Sheepmoor to Clonsilla via Blakestown Road (at first, then via Huntstown/Hartstown). The route nowadays is the same as it was in the mid-1980s (I never liked the bizarre twisting when Blanchardstown Centre opened and they made that the terminus, having the route loop via Clonsilla instead).

Want my opinion? They ought to have city-bound 39s operate right to Blanchardstown Road after departing the Centre, and increase the 39A frequency now that it has been returned to its original direct-via-Clonsilla-Road route. And ditch the 39B.

Anyone recall when the 39’s terminus was at Coolmine Cross? I certainly do…

The 39 bus shows Clonsilla on its sign board but this doesn't tell you about the grand tour that it makes around Blanchardstown, as well as the "quick" 15 minute half mile trip into and out of the Blanchardstown Centre in both directions.
[posted by: rs]

It's only numbers at the end of the day

Yup, numbers of cars on the road. One of the reasons why buses can never be on time these days, if they get to move at all…

Calm down folks!

It's only numbers at the end of the day, but, if ye are so passionate about numbers why not pop into The George some Sunday evening for a game of bingo and see how ' all on its own' number 1 is then!!

DD

by the way, has anyone ever seen a number 1 bus ?

Yes, I have…in fact, I rode one down to the so-called “Poolbeg Extension” in the early 1980s, which was a rather dirty area at the time, even walked back to the centre of Irishtown to catch a number 3 bus back to town. Served my curiosity right…and I’m totally surprised that the bus is still running, especially with the same lack of frequency that it used to have years and years ago—why does such an infrequent route bear the number 1, is my question? You’d think that a route like the 10, a busy route, would be the 1 instead, right? Personally, with the Port bridge having been there for years now, I would have thought that DB would have gone so far as to merge the limited service of the 1 with route 53 by now…

Why do/did the 16A's used to show Lr Rathfarnham on the scrolls when it in fact it went to Churchtown??

“Used to,” you say? I thought that the destination sign read “Túr Rath Fearnan/Rathfarnham Tower” myself. It always went to the centre of Churchtown, to my memory—is there some kind of invisible barrier that the Ordnance Survey maps show, that the 16A south-side terminus is really in Lower Rathfarnham? Time to put “Baile Teampaill/Churchtown” on the destination signs and into the timetable—high time already, about four decades overdue…

and another thing when the 50 went to Willington it always showed 'Crumlin'

Because it didn’t go to Willington (Wellington? after all, the road is “Wellington Lane”) at the time, instead turning around at the corners of Whitehall Road West (where it operated) and Whitehall Road East, the terminus actually being on Millgate Drive. (Technically, this would be South Kimmage or something, right? It sure would help if Ordnance Survey put border-markers on their maps of the city…)

but as soon as it was given the number 150 it suddenly began showing Willington or should it be Wellington ?even though this goes to Rossmore?

This was some money-saving on DB’s part—the scrolls said “Willington” from the time the original route 15C used to go to the roundabout. The route 150 timetable always said Rossmore however. Hey, things used to be worse—I remember back in the 1970s that all the route 18 destination signs used to read “Ballyfermot” even when the bus route had been extended to Palmerstown for years…yup, loads of money to spend on new paint jobs, but none for the important part, that being the destination scrolls. Still the same…

and another thing, the 44B, what's that all about, terminating in the middle of the f@#!in mountins

That 44B is one of the last hold-outs for some odd reason. Bus service to Leas Cross is gone (route 60), service to Dunard Co. Wicklow is gone (infrequent route 65 extension), but somehow the 44B hangs on, even though population is sparse and the roads are generally too narrow for buses, never mind lorries or even cars for that matter. I rode the 44B once, and I think I was the only passenger on there between Lamb’s Cross in Sandyford and the Ballybrack turning loop outside Glencullen (no, not Ballybrack between Cabinteely, Killiney and Shankill)—and you’re right of course, not a single bus shelter in sight, perhaps because of the paint scheme changes…?? (Weird thing is, most of the 44B trips don’t even make it into the city centre any more, and there’s even an extension of route 63 that takes the “front way” into Glencullen instead of running via Barnacullia and Ballyedmonduff, i.e. off the main road to Enniskerry. Must be people riding that I don’t know about…because all that I saw driving around there were SUVs, so people up that way aren’t so poor that they actually need a bus, from appearances…

I thought we were supposed to be rageing at the Dublin Bus, i'am raged that there is not enough rageing going on, by the way, has anyone ever seen a number 1 bus ? or do they all fall of the feckin breakwater into Dublin Bay ???!!!!, i bet it's electric down there!!!.

Why do/did the 16A's used to show Lr Rathfarnham on the scrolls when it in fact it went to Churchtown??, and another thing when the 50 went to Willington it always showed 'Crumlin' which was feckin miles from the terminus, but as soon as it was given the number 150 it suddenly began showing Willington or should it be Wellington ?even though this goes to Rossmore???, sure why not put something like "Rossmore just around the corner from Willington a couple of miles from Crumlin" on the scrolls, problem sorted eh...

......and another thing, the 44B, what's that all about, terminating in the middle of the feckin mountins and not even a feckin bus shelter to cover you from the hurricans up there, no McDonals either, and worst of all it's uphill all the way.
[posted by: R Master]
