here'here.when are we goin to learn anytin in this wonderfull wee country of ours, how in the name of god could anyone trust the gougers wee have inflicted on ourselves to run this country.i cannot understand how copying the deregulation fiasco in blighty will improve anytin here the warning signs are flashing bigtime folks!who's gettin the bungs?where are they coming from?instead of trying to sort it out its"I know lets hive it off to the private sector, let them worry about it,we'll make afew bob at the same time"i maybe wrong but thats the impression iget.does anyone agree?the only system i can see being succesfull is a properly funded publicly owned transport operation, christ as bad as tings are here now, wait till u see it post deregulation{i spent 3 yrs in london]cie only needs a good kick up the arse to sort itself out,o yes and the offloading of these governmentally appointedwasters who havn't a notion what a bus looks like never mind try to organise them which are foisted on cie.believe me you havnt seen the worst yet!
[posted by: ollie/dlk]

I've said it before and I'll say it again, privatisation will be a disaster, multiple operators will mean that for example if you have a weekly/monthly pass will you be restricted to only a specific operator!!?? so the consumer will suffer. I am a daily commuter (bus and train) and have only good things to say about the people in DB (especially the drivers), drivers don't deliberately go slowly, they can only drive one bus at a time, and they can't drive through traffic (bus lanes excepted). I do believe that more rather than less subvention is the answer. I've experienced many instances of buses not turning up on time (having suffered from 5 years dependent on the elusive 11!!) but this is because, a) DB were not given the money to buy buses, b) were not given the money to pay drivers once they were given money for a), and c) once the buses and drivers were in place, the pro car policies of other vested interests jammed up the roads so the buses couldn't run on time!

My only other significant experience of public transport is in Stockholm, and was a joy to behold! It can be done if the will is there to do it!!!???

Finally, one point with regard to the poll. I think that the question (or more correctly the answer) is unrealiable, as you cannot extrapolate those who believe in the privatisation of DB OR Aer Rianta, but not perhaps both!

Noel

Of course it is lack of education. Or perhaps just apathy on their part because most of them drive anyway. Don’t know where you ever experienced privatisation, Larry, but having lived in New Jersey for over twenty years, I certainly noted the difference in quality between fully private bus operations and bus operations done by the state—there was a marked superior element with the state’s buses. The private buses had no or broken air-conditioning (which is vital during hot, humid summers in the New York area), they did not accept bus passes for the most part unless they shared routes with the state-run agency, the schedules were far less reliable, a whole slew of problems. Most of these bus companies ended up going out of business or selling out to the state agency; the others that happened to hold out ended up being swallowed-up by Coach USA (Stagecoach’s US arm).

So the people are joyous? That will not last for long. The battle is just begun; the people will be shocked at what they are in for. Perhaps you have not been paying attention, Larry? Bus routes are to be bid out to operators that will accept the “least amount of state aid”, and boy, you are in for a surprise. The same people who are rejoicing over CIE being broken up will be screaming for them to be re-formed. I will not try to offer proof, because you and others will see this with your own eyes.

No it is not lack of education. Deal with it. They get that from dealing with crap public transport everyday. Maybe you should ask yourself why you have such little support instead of playing the taxi fed angle of making yourself look even worse. When you have the likes Des "I am the reincarnation of LARKIN!" of SIPTU going on about saving intergrated public transport what the hell is he on about!

CIE gave us no such thing. You cannot take away what never was. The battle is over, accept that CIE is dead and most Irish people are joyous.
[posted by: Larry]

View the poll here; thus far, some 66 percent pro and 34 percent anti. Is it just lack of education? Oh well, let them get what they want in that case. Looks like until Bertie gets kicked out of office, we shall be stuck with the Robert Moses era of transportation lack of choice.
