I've gotten copies of the annual report and accounts for CIE and the operating companies and am wading through it, it's heavy stuff but I'm going to try to put together an overview for posting here.

The surplus situation with DB is very interesting and it has received scant media coverage. Passenger numbers are up, revenue is up, which is good from a passenger point of view (since they aren't out to make a profit for their shareholders it means more money invested in the company).

Even more interesting is the CIE Chairman lamenting the unprofitability of rail freight (I nearly choked on my toast when I read that!). It's like smashing all the windows in your house, setting fire to the lawn, and covering your roof with crap, and then wondering why nobody wants to buy it.

Want to solve the gridlock problem, first of all rebuild the railways and put freight back on it, there's even money available from the EU for this kind of thing!

BTW, I wonder how much the study, to find out how much gridlock was costing CIE, cost?

http://www.onbusiness.ie/2003/0625/cie.html

It’s in that article. Bus Eireann and Iarnrod Eireann reportedly had losses, but Bus Atha Cliath had a surplus.

Mind you, that’s not the headline of the article, which actually states that CIE was able to defray losses by sales of property in the Dublin suburbs.

Oh, and gridlock cost CIE €52 million, so everybody get outta them cars (yeah right—from what I have read on this message board, it’s chiefly due to “profitable” DB’s mis-handling of bus operations that has driven lots of people into cars as opposed to relying on bus service).

Nothing like spin-reporting in the media, eh…?
