How things have changed over four years. (What's with resurrecting an old post?)

Platform 11 have turned out to be government shills/plants. They now go by the name "Rail Users Ireland" and have backed off a lot of their initial positions that they used to support (Western Rail Corridor, railfreight, any coherent spending on new rolling stock, network expansion in general, mainline electrification, operating speeds on par with the "big countries" of the EU) and have shown themselves as cheerleaders for the status quo (Luas, Metro, noisy Intercity DMUs, intercity trains no faster than 100 mph, the words of consultants are "gospel")…sad.

I think I agree with RBinge about connections. That service is currently very poor. I could do that to visit relatives in Blessington as the route goes quite nearby, and they could pick me up off the bus. I could then be dropped @ the stop, get the bus, and then walk from SG to Suffolk St, down by Central Bank and make my BE bus home @ the stop there on the quays.

Eek!

A CIE company providing a connection from Sandyford Luas. Of course, DB/BAC have also carefully provided five buses a week one way only from Shankill..

No sour grapes then? ;-)

One thing seems certain to me, if CIE had built Luas then there would have been proper connecting services from Sandyford.

There is a new shelter outside the civic offices on wood quay. Its nice. The glass is on the road side to prevent people falling under buses.. And it has a nice long seat too. Only problem is that the seat is facing the civic offices nad the shelter is enclosed at the end and so you cant see the bus coming.
[posted by: a2000]

There are plenty of busy bus stops in this city with no shelter

Oh yes, especially at City Centre termini. Not even the loading area of the Busaras is well-sheltered.

onus is on Bus Eireann to provide shelter

Doubt they'd erect a shelter for a mere three buses in each direction.

Is the Green Line timetable accurate? Shows the time taken from Sandyford to Faiche Stiabhna (not Stiofan, he) as 22 minutes. Add the Wicklow bus to that (sans waiting for each mode) and you've got an hour and 32 minutes tops. That typical? IE Arrow service claims to have a journey time of 1 hour 5 minutes between Connolly & Wicklow, by comparison...

The bus stop at Sandyford is not RPA property and therefore no responsibility to them. This onus is on Bus Eireann to provide shelter. The idea of the minimalist shelters is that you should not be waiting long enough for it to matter. There are plenty of busy bus stops in this city with no shelter.
[posted by: a2000]

That'll be another black mark against the RPA, who themselves are just another layer of bureaucracy in the country's public transport <strike>fiasco</strike> organisation.

There was no real reason to not allow IE to build the Luas lines, and it really made no sense not to build the Green Line as DART and re-connect it to Shanganagh Junction (wow, it'd be serving Bray now, if that were the case) and build an underground tunnel to connect it with the Broadstone Line (what, DARTs to Maynooth? but they have to wait for the Interconnector before they try that, right?)

The Luas wasn't even done on the cheap, on top of all that. It does not cost less to build light-rail versus building heavy-rail, in terms of capital expenditure. But now they get to build skimpy stations and call it progress (they were in a hurry to get rid of trams during the 30s, though, weren't they).

I think there is a good case for a Luas-link from Sandyford to Bray, which I suppose your Wickla bus does up to a point. Incidentally, I am appalled by the lack of shelter at Sandyford Luas. It is a very busy pickup and drop down point both for Aircoach and for people being met or dropped by drivers, yet this all has to be done in the freezing cold and howling gales. Why hasn't anybody put up a Kiosk or shelter?

Yes, it's an actual service, with three buses each way...timetable here...

Anyone use this service? Seems to me to be a quite unusual setup, designed to specifically sell the Luas. Takes an hour and ten minutes to run between Sandyford and Wicklow, going via localities such as Newtownmountkennedy and Newcastle.

Of course, it is noteworthy that when the Luas Green Line was still part of the general railway network, you could ride a train on it all the way to Wicklow instead. But I suppose that's what happens with pee-pee-pees...

Was reading the Bray People article on the subject, and it seems a bit out of the realm to me. IMHO, the government blew it big-time by not making the Green Line into DART, but that,s water under the bridge now, I suppose.

So now Bray is supposed to have two separate railway lines, the light-rail version (on which you used to be able to get a train to Wicklow, too) serving the new planned Town Centre, where they are supposed to be digging up the golf links. Well, in principle, I suppose it isn,t so bad, but you,ll have summer travellers getting confused when they end up by Main Street, of course. Hopefully, common sense might prevail and they,ll put the northern end of the Green Line underground and make it part of this new "Metro", whatever that,s going to look like...

Of course, this will also mean that more dents will be made in the business of the route 45 bus; I just hope they don,t get rid of that and do something crazy like extend the 7B to Bray to replace it, and turning the Deansgrange/Cabinteely segment into the 7C or something...(bah, I shouldn,t be giving DB crazy ideas like that)

Yeah, right...(hey, I'm sure they gave the "DART is duplicate service" excuse when cancelling the 8; but see how it doesn't work with the route 90, which is still surviving quite well. Do the same for the 8, O DB Demigods; ye have had a "surplus" for two years running and can well afford it...)

Yes and any multiple tickts are always cheaper at agents than on machines. 30 day ticket is 8 EURO cheaper from an agent. Handy info for impoverished students. Not enough mark up on single and returns for agents.
[posted by: a2000]
