I boarded a very full inbound bus this morning at Rathmines (I won't say which route because the driver could get into trouble) and it left the stop full to capacity. To my amazement, the bus, though stuffed, continued picking up at the next 2 stops until passengers were standing right up at the front window alongside the driver and well forward of the white line. As we approached the next stop the driver indicated he was going to stop again even though there wasn't even standing room left. At this point I said he should keep on going, the bus really was stuffed, and he did in fact keep on going. It is nice to have a driver who tries to fit an extra few in, but I thought this guy really was a bit OTT.

Going up by a "nickel" across the board.

This now means that a one-to-three-stage adult journey is going to be ninety cents. A trip out to Bray Strand will now be €1.85 one-way...and if you wanna ride to somewhere like Leixlip, it'll be a whopping €2.10...and somewhere like Balbriggan or Newcastle Co. Wicklow will be €4.10 or so, right? They gotta consolidate fares if they want people to switch back to the bus; but I guess that the privatisation crusade put zero impetus into DB engaging in something as modern as a flat fare...

Hi Guys,
Here is a good question that i hope you can answer.
This moring i got on to the 236 and the Bus Driver Charged me 1 Euro for the same trip I took last year which was 90c.
I complained and He told me that was what He was told to charge people.
I said ok , ill check this myself, so i checked the Timetable for my self and its says that the Flat Fare is 95c regardless of the Distance traveled, so the Driver is incorrect!!
You guys agree with that?? Here is the link to the 236 timetable .http://www.dublinbus.ie/your_journey/viewer.asp?route=236

But i have noticed that some drivers are chargeing 1 Euro for fares that cost 90c before had, I thought it was simple all fare up by 5c and that was it . Have i missed something??
Please enlighten me on this.
Thanks Peter

The most disheartening thing in all of this present mess is that Seamus Brennan is percieved as being the single most successful of This Governments Ministers.
I have long ago given up on any recognition of The Bus Service being regarded as an integral part of Dublins Life.
We have one of the least public-Transport friendly Councils in the Western World who will never allow an opportunity pass to discommode Public Transport users in favour of Car Drivers,Unicyclists or any other form of mobility.
To give one example: Why after many months of prepriatory work and long detailed examination and planning was it possible for the City Manager to Suspend the operation of the Pearse St/Tara St Bus-Gate during Operation Freeflow.
Wads the City Manager Unaware of the INCREASED strategic importance of this piece of infrastructure given the DART closure and the Funderland/Ice Rink events in the RDS.
The City Managers decision left Bus Atha Cliath without this Vital item which when combined with some special Allocated Kerbside space COULD have allieviated the situation on this corridor (See Discussions).
Instead The City Administrators took to the Hills leaving behind a recipe for chaos which cooked just fine.
The Bus-Gate issue is but a single one of many where the CITY has abandoned its public transport using citizens and the Companies tasked with serving them.
If anybody doubts the levels of Incompetence, disinterest and possibily dishonesty within Dublins Administration then look no further than the shameful state of O Connell St itself over the Christmas Holiday.
I contend that the poorest least democratic state in the known world would have displayed more civic pride in its Capital City than what was all too visible to citizen and visitor alike in Dublin.
And our liberal elite speculate on the reasons for the drop in Asylum Applications..?
Take away the Cash Money allowances and Ireland is left in all its very visible shambolic nakedness....
What a shower of wasters we continually elect..!

I wonder would using income from toll roads to provide free public transport be enough to encourage people who wouldn't otherwise use public transport to leave their cars at home?

Having a fee system for entering the city, like London, could be a good source of income.
Getting income from the Westlink and Eastlink bridges would be brilliant - I really hope Mr Brennan doesn't renegotiate the NTR contracts if they get to build the Red Cow cloverleaf interchange.

A downside to this is that the current public transport system can't cope with the existing passenger numbers.

The Minister for Transport, Séamus Brennan, is to present proposals to the Government within the next few weeks to increase bus and rail fares in line with inflation, which currently stands at 2.3%.

It is understood that the increases will come into effect in the New Year.

A spokeswoman for the minister also confirmed that future fare rises would be made on an annual basis and would be linked to inflation.

Last December, Mr Brennan granted CIE a 9% increase in fares, the first increase in eight years.

Maybe this has come up already but has anyone much experience of buying tickets online from Bus Eireann. To be fair to them, using the website is fairly easy. After you've selected your ticket, you receive an email with a reference number on it which you are to give to the driver who then issues you with a normal ticket. I did that (no problems) but when I gave it to the driver, he had a very blank expression on his face. He said he had never heard of internet tickets, didn't know what I was talking about. I then pointed to the "Internet Fare" button on his ticket dispensing machine - he replied "I've never pressed that button before in my life"
He let me on the bus anyway and I eventually got a ticket later on at Busaras but is this not typical of Bus Eireann (CIE in general I suppose) that they launch online ticket sales and yet fail to communicate this change to its drivers properly. It's a great idea, saves time but after my experience I won't be doing it again!

Democracy lives! Dublin Bus have been obliged to revise the new fares downwards from Monday 9 December 2002 after attempting to raise them by far more than the 9% for which they were given permission. See how this change came about? The angry punters (us) kicked up stink- Eoin Ryan summoned DB to appear before the Joint Committee on Transport which he currently chairs. DB appeared, discussions took place, and DB changed their fares. All this took place within a week to ten days. I find this encouraging- the often maligned politicians took responsibility and brought about change. Next up before the Transport Committee are Bus Eireann. Now what we need is a public transport user's council, with a statutory base, and some resources. The power of the council will be required to represent users whether DB is the main player or there are lots of competing private companies. We will also still have the Joint Committee on Transport. Yours Charlie Delap. P.S. Delighted to hear news of impending improvements to Busrage site- I can't imagine life without Busrage.

A gripe about the fare increases......
We all know that Dublin Bus recieves a huge amount of extra money on top of the fares it charges by giving us those crappy paper slips instead of real change.
I understand that they cannot spend this money as we all may suddenly decide to claim it from what ever big bank account they keep it in, but what I do realise is that they must be making HUGE interest on the grand total by now considering how long the paper change system has been in operation.
Therefore how can they possibly justify any fare increases considering that probably 35% of cash passengers give AT LEAST 10cent extra per journey???
If you work this out, over the two year or so period (or is it more?) we have had the paper change system, the grand total of idle money must be huge, even at a very low interest rate, i bet the return is quite profitable.........
all your thoughts please....????

Following the Government decision to allow CIE to raise fares by 9%, Dublin Bus are doing just that.
There is, however, some confusion as to what the new fares actually are, since posters on the buses themselves advertise stages 1-7 as €1, and 8-13 as €1.70.
I was wondering...since Dublin Bus doesn't have conductors anymore, if there were any considerations towards charging a flat fare for all destinations. What would be a fair rate to charge, perhaps £1 (or how is it going to be with the Euros? 2002's just around the corner, after all). I'm sure that everyone would love it if you could ride for just 10p, of course...but I was wondering if any serious proposals have been tabled.
Also...I think that DB should have transfer tickets, like most US city bus services do; that way, if you have to change buses, you don't have to pay double-fare, like has been inflicted upon bus riders for decades.
Any opinions...or is the atmosphere of frustration and anger still prevailing...?
