Does anybody know if the 38 bus is going to start going through Castlecurragh instead of the village. The Bus service is an absolute nightmare at the moment. Something needs to be done urgently. I would suggest having the 38 bus going through Castlecurragh and then to proceed to the Navan Road and By-pass Blanchardstown village altogether. That would be much better. At present it takes around 40-45 minutes to get from Ladyswell to Blanchardstown Village (which is absolute madness). Has anyone any ideas????

I've been reading the site and lots of interesting comments. I'm posting a message to find people interested in taking part in a TV show on transport. I am looking for an everyday bus user and luas user. I am also looking for a long distance commuter. I wanted to find people who had a lot to say about the service provided by the Dublin Bus and the Luas. If you are interested email me at amy@earthhorizon.ie or call (01)6621082 for further details. Hope to hear from some vocal people!
[posted by: Amy]

I see the AA have again floated their disastrous proposal to allow pooled cars to share buslanes, and this time the govt seem interested in it. If this proposal goes ahead it will slow down bus journey times and free up more space on the rest of the road for unpooled cars. It must be stopped. I am prepared to block any bus lane where this happens. Will anyone else do the same?

In Dublin, the “new” and never-properly-applied QBC concept is called BRT (“Bus Rapid Transit”) elsewhere on this lovely globe of ours. Really, with BRT/QBC bus lanes, the only vehicles permitted to use the lanes are buses and emergency vehicles (police, ambulances, fire brigade) and that’s it. Since taxi-cabs are not “mass transportation” nor emergency vehicles, they should be kept out of the bus lanes, bottom line.

And undertakers?? Now that is one of the most absurd proposals I have ever come across. I agree with the article—the people will not get “deader” due to delays in traffic, and besides, traditionally, a funeral procession is one of the slowest-moving columns of traffic.

And car pools? Let them get their own lanes on the motorways. There is no such thing as car-pool lanes on local roads that I know of—once you are off the motorway, it’s back to the old grind. Besides, what with all the cars on the road now, it seems to me that the motorways within the Dublin area that exist now do not have enough lanes anyhow.

Back to QBCs: Is the much-touted traffic-signal pre-emption in force yet or has that been abandoned? If it has been abandoned, it merely makes for yet another instance (like the “Métro”) that the Irish public has been lied to. And it seems like Fine Gael is just playing the old political football game yet again, pandering to everyone just to get in and subsequently do nothing once back in…

my problem is with buslanes and qbc's i am a private motorist who drive to work every day and pay road tax of over ¤250.00 a year for limited use of the public road space while at the same time bus lanes and qbs's are going up quicker them quick lighting and the public service vehicles that can use them pay less then ¤90.00 road tax a year. is this reasonable, let them have buslanes and qbc's if they want them but let them pay for them thought fare value road tax and let the companies/indivuals ie the public service vehicles who use these buslanes and qbc's supplement the contruction of them.

I was just wondering that. It seems to me that part of the route, between Chancery Lane (jct. Church Street Lower) and Smithfield will be a tracks-only affair.

Now…what with the masses of traffic on the Liffey Quays, would it not be prudent to turn the Line A route between Connolly Station and Heuston Bridge into Dublin’s first city-centre busway? or is that too forward-thinking.

Cities like Calgary, Canada have streets dedicated to buses and LRT only (like 5th Street in that particular town mentioned) with local delivery access permitted of course, but no cars or other vehicles permitted whatsoever excepting emergency vehicles—and no taxicabs!

Sounds too good to be true, I suppose…sharing a paved dedicated Luas route on the bus, by-passing all the gobs of traffic on the quays, then getting on Parkgate Street’s bus lanes or St. John’s Road West bus lanes and speeding right home on the ould bus…

Mind you, I would be completely against this for Line B though…mainly because it would hurt the potential for high-volume and higher-speed rail running on that line…

Any thoughts on this?

Brief quote below.

BUS commuters in the greater Dublin area are reaching their destinations up to 42pc faster than those making the same journey by car, an official report has revealed.

The report, based on monitoring of the city's Quality Bus Corridors (QBC), has found that due to gridlock, buses are outperforming cars on seven on the city's nine routes.

There is also an increase in the number of commuters leaving their cars at home, according to the survey by the Dublin Transportation Office (DTO).

Commuters travelling into the city on the Finglas QBC during the morning rush hour are benefiting most.

The average bus journey on the route takes 11 minutes 46 seconds, compared to 20 minutes 20 seconds by car, resulting in a 42pc time saving.

Well, that's certainly good for the proponents of BRT (aka "Bus Rapid Transit", which the QBCs are actually a form of). For those that do not know, politicians in many developed countries are touting BRT as a "lower-cost" alternative to LRT, which is not necessarily true. Either way, it's darn good to see the QBCs starting to trounce the ridiculous road traffic insofar as efficient commuting...only took them how long, 12 years to hit the papers since the QBC concept was first introduced??

A fellow AC Driver had this happen to him.

Picture this scenario:

Driving to the airport with aprox 6 skulls onboard along old swords road thru Santry. On passing the Marriot Hotel on the left, a red car is driving in the Buslane with undue hesitation and at a speed of less than 30mph. The AC Driver then flashes his headlights at the car which remains in the buslane. The AC driver then overtakes the red car and resumes his position in the Buslane once passed.

A short while later, he hears the sounds of a siren and only assumes it is the red car which is driving at a rate of knots up his arse and even then with no flashing blue lights.

Turns out the red car was an unmarked Garda Car and they have threatened to do him for Driving without undue care an attention. They say that "they are the Gardai and not him", he overtook without indicating and pulled infront and slammed brakes on.

Furthermore he says they were so confrontational it was almost like a civillian in a fit of roadrage except they were wearing uniforms.

The AC Driver has 2 witnesses willing to give statements.

Your comments please.
[posted by: Aircoach Man]

A word of advice/warning to all you private car drivers, motorcyclists and hackneys that insist on using Bus Lanes during hours of operation; -

If contact is made between your vehicle that you are driving and a bus or a taxi, then not only are you likely to be prosecuted by the Gardai, you will not be insured. At the least you will not be able to claim for your repairs. At thw worst case of injury, you are likely to go to prison.

Happy driving.
[posted by: ur head be it]

I'm living in the long suffering area of west Clondalkin. (OK, OK I like the 51D, lovely bus, gets me hoem quite quickly). HOWEVER, the problems arise with the 51X rooute, which, travelling through inchicore, turns up past con colbert house, right on to the Johns road, and promtly grinds to a halt. It then takes 10-15 minutes (depending on traffic) to reach heuston station. I've put up with this because the regular route at that time is even slower.

Yesterday, I turn onto the Johns road and lo and behold, I find a bus lane. This runs most of the way from that junction to huston, shaving a good 10 mins off the journey. OK so we still get caught on the north quays. but it's nice to see someone putting the lane there.

Does anyone know how far back it extnds? and is it that I only noticed it yesterday or it's only been there that long?

Alan
