I am one of those "Dublin Bus sucks" people. I lived in Dublin during 2001/2002, when there were far less people living here, and the 65B bus service was never on time when I wanted to get home from work. Here's an example:

"We stopped to watch a bus go past on the other side of the road. The rain fell heavily and we both breathed a sigh of relief. The bus would be back in a moment to pick us up.
We waited for another 10 minutes.
‘Where the hell is that bus?’ I snapped. ‘I’m bloody freezing out here! Where do the buggers go?’
This bus stop was like the Bermuda Triangle. Double-decker buses just… vanished. How could someone make a £250,000, four metre high bus painted in vibrant blue, white and orange disappear? Maybe the driver had nicked off to the nearest pub for a drink; there was a tavern just over the next hill.
I questioned a number of people about the puzzling bus disappearances. The truth was more idiotic than my pub theory. The drivers were supposed to turn around 100 metres up the road and come back to pick us up. Drivers who were running late did not turn around. They raced past, turned onto the nearest freeway and headed back into the city. The buses were completely empty.
It’s the sort of efficiency drive I would expect from Sir Humphrey Appleby of the BBC’s Yes Minister series. In one episode, Appleby posted 200 administrators to a brand new hospital. No patients had been admitted and there were no doctors or nurses, because, ‘the cost would be prohibitive, Minister’." See www.chrisdowding.net for more.

I'm not sure if the 65B route is still rotton. Hopefully most people put up with the bus to Tallaght and catch the Luas home from the Square (the Luas was only getting built when I worked here). I sympathise with anyone who has to use the 65B all the way to town. I consider myself to be environmentally aware, but it you're on the 65B, maybe you should buy yourself an old banger.

with regard its timing. I know and accept that there will always be occasional times when buses simply cannot leave the terminus on time, but I get this bus from Hawkins St several times a week and I swear it NEVER leaves on time. In comparison to the 46a - another high frequency route - it is disgraceful - what's the explanation?

From my local bustop (ie: not at either terminus), I've often been waiting 30 mins for a 39 even though they are supposed to go every ten minutes.

What's most frustrating (intriuging?) about this is that I genuinely have no other complaints about other buses I take. I'm not one of these ''Dublin bus sucks!!'' people. The 37 and 70 always seem to leave the termini on time. I find the 66 and 67a pretty reliable. The 46a is excellent, as are most of the xpressos to UCD. So why is the 39 so unreliable?

Every ten mins my arse!

(also, why do some townbound 39s state the destination is ''westmoreland st'', not ''hawkins st'' ? I'm geussing this is because Hawkins St gets overcrowded with buses at times but this just adds to my frustration of this route!)

I totally agree with the first post. The 79/a does not go as frequently as it purports to on the timetable and when I once asked the guy who seems to be in charge of the buses on the quays about this he replied with a rude and agressive retort that left me very upset.

Now yesterday I see that the 79a is being diverted away from inchicore. This means that almost half (32 of 65) the 79/a service is being cut from going down inchicore road.

This is crazy given that the 79/a is rarely half full (unlike the other bus serving the Model School the 78a which is always very full) and lots of people get on/off on the Inchicore road. To divert an undersubscribed bus so it doesn't go past lots of passengers is crazy.

Also it means that coming from town and heuston station tourists will have a reduced service to Kilmainham Gaol, the HIlton and IMMA.

It is simply crazy to make public transport less accessible to people who (despite poor service and rude attitudes) continue to use it.
[posted by: cb]

I have been using the 79/79A service for some time now. I have never come across a route that is managed on such an ad-hoc basis. The timetable appears merely aspirational. Most (with a few exceptions) of the drivers saunter along at a lethargic pace with a view to missing their next departure time. Any enquiries to inspectors on Aston Quay are met with hostility as if one asked an impertinent question - they seem too much in cahoots with the drivers they pretend to manage. Problems cannot all be laid at the door of traffic congestion as other routes leaving Aston Quay seem to fare a lot better (51B,78A, 90 etc.etc.). It has to be a candidate for the worst most inconsistent bus service in Dublin.

Hey,I was on the 40D last nite and a rock was thrown at the bus. i didnt notice it till it smashed the window to the right of my head and the rock barely missed me and my friend. If it had hit us one of us was dead. It was a huge rock. I heard this has happened a few times. Something should be done before someone is killed. Any one else witness this?

Ok, so put simply 'No, I have not travelled on a bus in years, and I have as much right to speak about the current state of Dublin Bus system as a politician'

I haven't travelled on a bus in years? Is that a disqualification? You don't have to be a current bus user to be concerned about bus service, you know. Heck, you don't even have to be in the country to worry about bus service in Dublin. You ever been out of the country?

Your right, private operators are not lining up to operate routes like the 116/7/8 etc. because they wont make a profit. Making a profit is for the Privateers. Dublin Bus, a public, government run subsidary of CIE, does run these routes to provide a service, something a privateer wont do, as if it doesnt line the investor/shareholders pockets, its no good. The Xpresso's and the 116/7/8 are huge sucesses to local people. I know for a fact that the 27C/X/127 leave every morning and by the time they hit the UCI they are Full. The 116/7/8 fill up on the Stillorgan QBC.

So my solution being the big genius I am is:

Create more routes like this to keep passengers getting from A to B and to keep people like you moaning about CIE this, Donard that, irregular bus services blah

Wow, you don't know one thing that you're talking about. Once or twice daily peak route services are the profitable ones. If DB were providing a service, such buses would be running as frequently as the former City Swifts and City Imps. Xpresso buses would be just as successful if they ran all day and charged regular fares—and they wouldn't charge extra fare if they weren't intended to embellish the bottom line. More buses would actually attract passengers out of their cars, you know—so how do you judge these buses to be "successes" when all that's resulted is a huge mire of cars on the road?

Your solution is as worthless as your flames. Stick to what you know, whatever that happens to be.

Let's put it this way: I've travelled all over the Dublin Bus system long before you could ride a bus unaccompanied by parents or elder guardians. So I've got some experience in the matter. I've been from Donard to Balbriggan, from Newcastle County Wicklow to Oldtown, from Glencullen to Kilcock. So your question is utterly worthless&#151just like the efficacy and utility of these once-or-twice-daily routes.

I don't see any parallel private operators vying to take over and/or expand operations of such routes, so that even compounds their lack of viability.

What's your solution, genius, now that you've stuck your neck out?

He could write into Metro.Writing letters to newspapers always solves problems ;-).Or he could be proactive and tell the gobs**tes to stop smoking. If put to them in the correct manner it can work.I've heard many a bus driver come on the PA and regale us using true dublin wit about the offending junkbags that they get so embarressed by everyone laughin at them that they get off at the next stop.Or knock them out, whatever.
[posted by: G]
