Drivers, and other workers here in the UK can sign an opt-out on the 48 hour week, which is voluntary and means they can work longer hours, it does'nt affect the rest of the working time directive, but allows people to do overtime.

From http://breaking.tcm.ie/

Ferries protest to cause major transport disruption

Public transport services are facing major disruption this afternoon during protests against Irish Ferries' plan to replace its seafaring workers with cheaper labour from eastern Europe.

The worst of the disruption will be in Dublin, where tens of thousands of people are expected to attend a march on the Dáil.

Dublin Bus has said it cannot guarantee services after 11am, while DART and other commuter rail services are also expected to be hit.

Bus Éireann, meanwhile, is predicting disruption in urban areas, but said services should be running as normal this evening.

Meanwhile, talks between Irish Ferries and SIPTU broke up without agreement at the Labour Relations Commission in Dublin early this morning.

The negotiations are not expected to resume today because of the national day of protest arranged by the trade union movement to protest at the company's controversial "outsourcing"' plan.

Irish Ferries wants to lay off all its seafaring workers and replace them with cheaper labour from eastern Europe in an effort to reduce its costs.

The company is believed to have threatened to withdraw the redundancy package it has offered to its existing workers unless a resolution was found by yesterday evening.
Dublin Bus services to be disrupted by unofficial action
22/01/2004 - 7:47:15 am

Dublin Bus services are expected to be disrupted for a number of hours this morning as drivers down tools to attend a mass union meeting.

The company has advised passengers that the unofficial protest could cause "severe" disruption from 9.30am until the early afternoon.

The union meeting was originally organised to coincide with a two-hour stoppage by SIPTU workers at Dublin, Cork and Shannon airports this morning. That stoppage was called off yesterday, but SIPTU's Dublin Bus branch decided to press ahead with today's meeting regardless.

The meeting does not have the approval of senior SIPTU officials and Dublin Bus has vowed to deduct wages from any drivers who attend while rostered for duty.

Commuters could be facing travel disruption after the National Bus and Railworkers Union said it will not continue talks with the Department of Transport about the future of CIÉ.

The national executive of the NBRU met for three hours today to decide the union's stance on the break-up of CIÉ. Its leadership has been mandated to take whatever industrial action is necessary to prevent the company from being broken up.

The union will not outline what form industrial action might take but it may involve a series of one-day work stoppages.

A Department of Transport spokesman said Minister Séamus Brennan had a right to articulate his policy position, and said that did not have to conflict with ongoing negotiations.

The CIÉ group of unions is due to meet on Thursday to decide its next move. The unions are due to meet Department of Transport officials next week but those talks may not now go ahead.

Bus services across the North are expected to be cancelled tomorrow (Friday 17/10/2003) because of a strike by drivers and other Translink staff.

Citybus and Ulsterbus services will be affected.

Talks between union representatives and Translink management yesterday failed to resolve the issue, although negotiations are continuing.

admin on "Unions announce campaign against CIE break-up"

From: http://breaking.tcm.ie

Unions representing workers at CIE have agreed a campaign of industrial action to oppose the Government's plans to break up the company and privatise 25% of Dublin Bus routes.

SIPTU, the ATGWU and the National Bus and Railworkers Union have claimed that the plans would cost hundreds of millions of euro to implement and would lead to jobs losses and a deterioration in the service provided to consumers.

The three unions have threatened to cause a "summer of discontent" unless Transport Minister Seamus Brennan agrees to change the plans - something the minister has refused to do.

The CIE unions agreed today to hold a 'no-fares' day on Friday, July 18, when the public will be allowed to travel for free and will be issued with information leaflets about the CIE break-up instead of tickets.

A national day of protest will also be held on August 19, with demonstrations arranged for towns and cities throughout Ireland.

The CIE unions said they would escalate the campaign later in the autumn and during Ireland's presidency of the EU next year if the Government insists on pressing ahead with its plans.

NBRU spokesman Liam Tobin said: "The unions have agreed a co-ordinated and concerted campaign. All of them have a mandate for industrial action to stop the minister from carrying out his plans."
