Quite sad, these statistics. To think that if we had more mass transportation, some of these deaths could have been avoided...

RTE News

EU report highlights road fatalities

Friday, 27 April 2007 08:31

A European Commission report out today shows that Ireland has the worst road death figures in Europe, when it comes to young people.

The figures show that over one third of those killed on Irish roads are under 25.

The European Union Transport Commissioner, Jacques Barrot, is to present a study comparing EU averages with statistics from the 27 individual member states.

The report from the European Commission shows that while road deaths in Ireland have decreased over the past ten years - with 368 people dying in 2006 - we are still far above the European average.

Ireland also has the highest percentage of young people killed in road accidents.

The report showed that 38% of all those killed in crashes are under 25, while 30% are between 18 and 25.

The report also showed that 75% of people killed on the EU's roads in 2005 were men.

A second report, out today, found that Ireland is also behind when it comes to seat belt usage.

Only 86% of us wear our belts while in the front seat of the car, compared to 97% per cent of French drivers.

Our use of safety belts in the back seats of cars is even worse. Ireland has one of the worst records in Europe, with only 46% of back seat passengers wearing their belts.

how many of you have been late for work on the bus??? either by bad weather, some idiot truck driver getting stuck under a bridge(knowing the truck won't fit) buses breaking down traffic, sunday drivers, etc...

dublin bus and cie should really sit down and talk anong themselves about routes and timetables, i personnally couldn't tell you how often i'm late by the above. atleat set timetables with realistic time, unlike the 17A every 15 minutes (my arse) more like 50 minutes, and that equals to congetsion and agrovation.

(i love big words, they make me sound safisticated)

Mostly LT regs around my area and prob 9/10 of them have blacked out windows, usually Audi's or 5series Bm's.
It was suggested that maybe they need the windows blacked out due to extreme weather conditions in their country....glare from sun, glare from snow.Or is there some other dodgy reason????

The reason why all foreign reg drivers get away with what they do is beacause they know they are untouchable. As mad mullah pointed out ,the only people that get penalty points are people with irish driving licences. so therefore it is fair to say that it is open season for every joe soap that doesn't have an irish licence. A classic example is northern drivers coming down south. As long as there in the north ,there little angles, but at soon as they cross the border they become the anti-christ

Oh dear Xp it`s much worse than that i`m afraid.....
As the recent tragedy on the M50 illustrated many of the drivers from the countries you mention do possess an attitude towards Irish or indeed ANY form of regulation or restriction on their movements.
There is also the issue of why so many cars with LA,LV,RO,LT and other Eastern Bloc countries are fitted with fully blacked out windows.
This when coupled with a somewhat startling lack of Irish Insurance or Tax documentation raises some very unsettling questions.
Even today an Irish National risks strong action from the Customs and Excise if found driving a foreign registered vehicle within the state.
My advice would be to carry a Camera at all times and if involved in an altercation of any sort with a vehicle with a foreign reg then take as many pics as possible especially of the occupants.
Times are indeed changing and Paddy better change along with them or else !!

Dunno if anyone here has noticed the road behavior of the large amount of foreign registered cars in Dublin, i.e Latvian, hungarians, Polish etc. God knows what the driving test is like in those countries or even if they have one? Speed limits, yield signs, mini-roundabouts, stop signs/road markings appear to mean nothing to these people! One also wonders at the people who "barge" there way past a bus pulling out of a stop only to be then passed by the same bus 2mins later in the bus lane!
[posted by: XpressoX]

While just being a humble bus user I would like to say that the fault of people being late for work, appointments etc is NOT that of the guy driving the bus, it is the fault of the morons who insist of driving everywhere. Thus the bus gets stuck in the mess that the car drivers create. Kinda obvious is'bnt it ??.
No better example is the curse that is the Blanchardstown Centre at the weekends. The amount of people who drive up there is so bad that it is quicker to walk up to then use any other form of transport. How the bus drivers don'nt have a heart attack is beyond me

DLRCC are at best incompetent and at worst disasterous, the have systematically ruined the majority of town centres in their jurisdiciton with so called urban improvemnt schemes, the have even benn known to draw parking spaces on street corners! Compared to Fingal, South and the City, DLRCC are a shambles, they have ruined the vast majority of south Dublin.
Besides this is a PUBLIC TRANSIT based website, and the fact that you chose to complain about car parking just shows the car centred mentality of Dubliners, but you are right about DLRCC!

Why is it, that in areas under the control of Dun Laoire Council, car parking is uncontrolled and sporadic? Cars park on junctions, on double yellows, at bus stops. In fact the council in their stupidity even painted car parkng spaces at some bus stops. It ridicules all health and safety issues for boarding and alighting from buses. Dun Laoire Council should be prosecuted for painting double yellow lines as they are wasting tax payers money since there is no enforcement.

This is from an Irish Independent article. Link here for those who subscribe to their Unison.ie web pages, but for those who do not, here's some of the article:

DUBLIN'S new-look O'Connell Street is to be sandblasted because buses are skidding dangerously on its shiny granite surface.

Dublin Bus has raised concerns about the street, which only recently emerged from the chaos of Luas construction and a multi-million euro regeneration project.

Now the city council has admitted there is a problem and says it will have to sandblast the eye-catching granite surface.

The bus company wrote to the council after two recent incidents. In one, a bus skidded as soon as the driver hit the brakes.

Dublin Bus raised serious concerns about the safety of the road's surface in wet weather.

Who in blazes is letting these self-styled road designers loose onto O'Connell Street? It's a good thing that the KD-class isn't still around, otherwise they'd end up on their sides (and they were bad enough on wet asphalt). And who in blazes authorised the blatant "government pork" project of putting granite onto a street surface?? (Granite is for tomb-stones, not street surfaces...)

This is due to ESB works, and the advance notice and standard of information given by Dun Laoghaire rathdown has been pathetic.

The notice to motorists on their site gives misleading information, with one of the quoted diversions sending people into a cul-de-sac.

Meanwhile, the good folk of DLR CoCo are more concerned about replacing the nameplate on the new road bridge on Ballinteer Road (the one just before the crossroads) because the one currently on it does not conform to standard coulcil specifications . . .

SoS
[posted by: Steve O'Shea]
