A couple of times recently I have seen buses marked out of service carrying several passengers, and not simply at the end of the journey. The other night (Saturday about 7.15pm) a bus marked as As seirbhis stopped in Rathmines, left off some of the passengers aboard and then continued on its journey into town with 6 or 7 passengers still on board. Was this correct behaviour by that driver?

Having wasted loads of money revamping the livery of DB - they still havent managed to complete the repaints on many buses - the result is a confused multicoloured mess. Better to stick with the simple green livery which wont look as dirty after a long day on the road. Heres to emerald green The Return - afterall Dublin is Dublin - tell a londoner to paint London bus white and yellow and you,ll get short shrift. If you told a new york cabby to drive around in a multicoloured taxi he,d give u whats for.
[from: www.primezone.com]

182 Double Deckers from Volvo Buses to Dublin and London

GOTEBORG, Sweden, Nov. 8, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Volvo Buses has received two orders for 182 double deckers. 120 of them will go into service in Dublin and the rest will run on three new bus routes in London.

The Dublin Bus order is for 100 Volvo B7TLs. This is a 10.7 metre low-floor chassis. The coachwork will be the Alexander Dennis ALX400, which has seating for 76 passengers and standing room for 15. Deliveries will take place in Spring/Summer 2006.

The second part of the order consists of 20 triple-axle Volvo B9TLs. The chassis is 12 metres long with a low floor the full length of the bus. This is the biggest order to date for this product in the UK and the first ever for Ireland.

The body will be the Alexander Dennis Enviro 500 with a seating capacity of 91 passengers and standing room for 32. The customer has chosen this type of bus for its passenger capacity, because the buses will run on the busy routes through the centre of Dublin. The order is a step in Dublin,s ongoing modernisation of its bus fleet, dominated by Volvo buses. The 20 double deckers will be delivered this year.

62 buses to London

The second order is from London Central, which is part of the major transport firm the Go Ahead Group. The order consists of 62 low-floor double deckers. The chassis is the 10.1 metre Volvo B7TL. The stipulation within Go Ahead Group,s environmental policy of using Ultralow Sulphur Diesel (USD), in conjunction with the buses being equipped with particulate traps (CRT), will further contribute to the reduction of particulates in the atmosphere.

The coachwork will be the Wrightbus Gemini with a seating capacity of 64 passengers and standing room for 26. The buses will be used on three new bus routes from southern parts of London to the centre.

When the 62-bus order is supplied in April next year, the Go Ahead Group will have more than 700 Volvo double decker buses in its fleet in London.

,The Volvo B7TL has been refined into a very reliable workhorse and as such is our chassis of choice., says Engineering Director Phil Margrave. ,Our past experience of operating the Volvo/Wrightbus combination has made the repeat order an easy decision.,

yesterday(25-2-2005)when I was coming home from town ,I went up to the 120/121/122 bus stop in O`Connell Street, I seen a single decker at the stop and people get on, so i got on not bothering to look at the number as any of them would take me to Cabra.
All seemed fine until we went around by Mountjoy Street and I was wondering where it was going because Phibsboro single deckers hardly ever take that route, so i thought there was some divertions in place, until, we slowed down at Dowth Avenue and turned in!!
it made the turn perfectly because the lady driver on it is a regular on the 122 and is used to driving them, so she did it without any hassle,

so what i want to know
was that just a one-off operation or will we be seeing single deckers on the 120 again?
[posted by: gary]

A Summerhill bus driver had been left seriously injured when he was attacked after he tried to evict a smoking passenger! Amazingly the driver had his protective shield fully up but the passenger climbed through the dashboard! The incedent happened on the route 13 last week in Ballymun. Now ringsend have leant AV8 to Summerhill because this bus has a few undercover cameras, AV8 will be marked in on the 13-13A group over the next few weeks & will have undercover db & gardai on board. Summerhill route 13A/C will now not be serving Coultry due to heavy stoning of buses!
[posted by: jODI]

I have to say that the ride quality on the lower deck of a low-floor bus sucks badger-droppings.

Now how many wheelchair passengers do they serve with these buses? I suspect that most wheelchair-bound people jump into their converted automobiles and give the low-floor buses the two-finger salute.

Amusing to see that one of the routes proudly converted thereof is the 26, the bus to nowhere in particular (i.e. whose route is covered by other routes, such as the 18, 25/66/67 and 78/78A). How about doing something useful with that route like extending it into Liffey Valley Centre and then sending it to Lucan via the new estates in Ballyowen? After all, their current motto is "Transport For All," is it not...

Now that Lord Mayor Livingstone`s Bus plans for London seem to be stalling somewhat it may offer us Dubs a bit of a lifeline.
Transport for London have suspended their highly successful and cost effective Routemaster Refurbishment plan and are instead accellerating the withdrawal of these fine machines.
The reasons are manifold but are essentially Accountancy driven.
Kens huge investment in London Buses during his period in office has turned Londons Bus service around from being a cut-back operation to once again being seen as a driving force in the City`s commercial life.
However having raced so far ahead and committed such huge resources to Bus Transport TfL are now in something of a quandary as they are becoming increasingly financially stretched.
The first casuality of this was Kens committment to retain TPO in Central London and with it the Routemaster.
Even allowing for the uncomfortable fact that TfL can refurbish 3 Routemasters for the cost of a single ALX type Low-Floor bus the bottom line of employing TWO staff per bus per shift has allowed to Accountants to win out.
In order to achieve their goal however TfL have had to press ahead with the somewhat unpopular and financially suspect "Cashless" off bus ticketing combined with Low-Floor Citaro Articulated buses on Central routes.
It is testimony to the essential strength of the Routemaster Principle that only a complete Volte-Face in operational terms could allow the High Tech Modern approach to actually match the 50 year old Routemaster for efficiency.
NOW,This is our opportunity to accquire the cream of the RM/L fleet as they come off service.
Most are refurbished to the highest standards including new Scania engines, and a variety of bidy and interior mods which have left a vehicle which is ready to work at full efficiency for at least another seven years.
I understand that £12,000 per bus is a ball park figure on the retail market.
I consider the accquisition and use of a fleet of RM/L`s would be a very sensible and effective response to the present emergency in Public Transport which Dublin is now experiencing.
Remember LUAS should be carrying well over 7,000 pax per day by now,so we have an immediate capacity shortfall which needs to be filled BEFORE we even begin to move forward.
Main problem that I forsee is that the Routemaster operation wold prove so popular with the Customers that nobody would want to use the Shiny new Trams when they eventually do enter service.
Any other opinions on this..?

Thanks to the existence of these low-floor Civis buses, whose flashy exterior is meant to try to hypnotise cities out of investing in the superior technology of LRT (that is, superior to buses but inferior to grade-separate heavy-rail), I find myself unable to complain about the perceived failings of Luas or even the bad decision of DB to buy that AW-class articulated.

Pro-BRT (bus rapid transit) factions have been displaying pics of this French-built abomination on their web sites, as well as these photos appearing in newspaper web site articles. The buses, for low-floor artics, have an extreme shortage of seats, a mere 39 total. The design of the doors is with an eye towards having them stop at modified footpaths with a similitude to LRT platforms (hence the LRT-like door design, intended for use with proof-of-payment systems, and also permitting level wheelchair boarding); the buses are even equipped with space-age guidance systems that would steer for the driver (so they can sip coffee instead of keeping their eyes on the road :-P) and also to help line-up the bus perfectly with a “station” platform, like your average LRV does automatically due to it actually being on rails. Well, there you go, just another bit of politician-pleasing courtesy of Irisbus, a conglomerate which includes Renault/Iveco…
